Hi all,

In this keyboard music, the right hand is notated in the top staff and the left hand in the lower staff. (see picture)

I am now considering notating both hands on the lower staff using stems up/down etc. (see other picture)

Which is preferable? Any advice from experts/editors/publisher types on the forum would be appreciated!

Cheers,
HP.

I like Plan A -- two staves.

as a pianist I prefer B, but in the upper staff you have to keep a treble clef, and hide the whole note rest.

Finale (started with ver. 3.0) using 2012 (2014 has been shelved for its lack of support for older Garritan libraries), putting Finale 25 through its paces.

As a pianist, I second Michel's opinion, including the upper staff clef and default rest.

I would find A easier to sight read at the piano. With B, I might wonder if I should roll a bunch of stuff up to a chord in the same hand. (I would probably figure it out with a bit of trial.)

Thanks Bill, Michel and Vaughan. The next entry to appear on the upper staff requires a bass clef. Given that, do you still recommend I use the treble clef (thereby delaying the fore-warning of the upcoming clef?)

Thanks ttw, it seems I have no consensus on the matter! I am a pianist myself and I think either would work, I just wonder if there is a "correct" approach, or a rule. I guess not....

I've seen both. Usually, one way makes more sense. Depends on the piece.

Whatever you decide, use the same principle throughout the piece. If similar things are notated differently, the reader (or sight reader) will think something different is meant.

If you use option B, the LH and RH stems must not be joined. You must horizontally separate the stems at the 1st and 3rd chords. As it stands now, the player cannot easily see which note(s) are meant for which hand.

If that is corrected, both options would be equally good to me.

Ok, thanks! Here is the finished product for Option B.
PS: The right hand rest is hidden.

As a pianist, to me B is cluttered. I prefer A.

That looks super clean and easy to read for me. I might prefer the D flat-E combination to be slightly tighter (I don't mind the same ledger line; it's not a collision if it's the same beat) but that's a minor point.
