I would swear that I have done this before.  I have many measures of eighth notes in 6/8 time, with rests on beats 2 and 5.  My time signature is in two dotted quarter beats (not 6 eighth note beats).  I don't want the beams tied over each rest.  I know I can change them all manually, but isn't there a way to do it globally?

I searched all through the forum and couldn't find this.  I even (gasp) searched the Finale help, which for me has always been worth almost nothing.  I get all my help from the forum.  Thanks to all of you!

You can select the measures in question and use "rebeam to time signature" and select the six-eighth-note variety of 6/8, but if you want to keep three eighth notes beamed you need to be careful not to select those.

Why would you want to do that? Just curious. The beauty of those beams is that they delineate the beat patterns very clearly. (Is the passage to be beat in 6?) Besides, all those flags make the notation look "noisy". Gives me the itches.

I agree wholeheartedly, even (or especially) in vocal music. Musicians need to be able to see the rhythmical hierarchy at a glance!

Honestly, I go back and forth between wanting the beams broken because I don't like piles of beams over rests (especially when the rests need to move out of the way), and wanting them unbroken because I think it looks neater.  My biggest argument for breaking them is that in a faster 6/8 time, the 3rd and 6th eighth notes in the measure belong more to the next beat than to the previous note, so I think it gives a better feel of the beat when they are broken.  Since Forum Opinion is leaning strongly towards leaving them, I will leave them!  (But thanks so much for the tip about changing the time signature.)

I just upgraded my Finale to the latest version, but haven't updated my signature!
