In my score, I am noticing that the default flat symbols are a bit too tall, i.e.: when they appear under a beam in the middle of a semiquaver passage, for example, the top of the flat symbol collides with the beams.

As far as I can tell, this is the default behaviour. (I haven't tinkered under the hood). As a work around, I raise the beam a bit so that it clears the top of the flat symbol.

Is it possible to avoid the collisions in the first place?

Cheers,
Hector Pascal.

What music font are you using for the flats?

Hi Peter,

I am using Maestro font, my choice I made when I used the setup wizard.

The "long" left hand side vertical line of the flat symbol actually looks quite nice, I guess it's more of a default beam height issue. It's most pronounced when I have a melodic figure such as:

Treble Clef: Ab (below middle C) up a tone to Bb and up a tone to Db (all semiquavers). It's the Db where the flat hits the beam.

Cheers,
HP.

Could you post some screenshots of examples, or a sample document?

Here's what looks like on my default file:

Would I have caused some of these collisions by using one of those fancy beaming plugins? (French beams, anyone?) I can't remember if I used that sort of feature, but there's a chance I may have found such a plugin and used it on this score at some stage... I cannot recall...

I think you've definitely got different beam settings, or applied some plug-in. I don't get anything like yours, even after applying Patterson beams.

Yes, you have French Beams in your example. In French Beams, the inner stems on beamed groups do not extend to the primary (eighth) beam. Worthless, as far as I'm concerned, unless you are trying to duplicate an engraving that uses this odd convention.

The picture below shows Finale's default beaming. If you want to see what your file looks like at the default, make a copy and run "Clear Selected Items - Stem and Beam Adjustments".

In general, stems should be at least an octave tall.

In the posted sample where the flat stem crosses the beam, it is due to a setting not being checked. If you select to allow a primary beam within a space, the conflict doesn't arise.

Thanks! With all your help, I've got the beams looking better. (I had run the Patterson Beams Lite plugin sometime ago and had selected French beams thinking it would give my score a certain ... Je ne sais pas... . Anyway, I've managed to revisit the plugin and remove the French beams by running the remove function. I also had to uncheck a minimum angle that I had specified without knowing what I was doing).

So, I think I am back to default settings..

PS: Thanks, N., for the tip re: "Clear Selected Items - Stem and Beam Adjustments". That has completely solved the problem :)
