how do i make the bass cleff quiet and the treble cleff loud at the same point in a piano score?

First off, you'll have better luck getting an answer if you ask questions like this in the Windows or Mac Forums rather than on the Plug-In Development Forum.
You need to set up the Instrument List as though there were two different pianos. Select Windows Menu > Instrument List. For Staff 2, click the down arrow next to Instrument. Select New Instrument. In the Instrument Name box, type in a new name like Piano_2. You can leave the patch and the channel number alone, just click OK, then close the Instrument list.
Now you can assign separate expressions like ff to the treble clef and pp to the bass clef. Make sure you specify that the expression should affect This Staff Only. You may also choose to have one or both expressions show on screen only, but not print out.

This doesn't work for me. I have to assign Piano_2 to a different MIDI channel if I want to hear different volumes at the same time.

Really? I used to assign separate channels until someone on the Forum pointed out that that was not necessary. I can definitely get different dynamics on the two staves even though they're on the same channel. They just have to be different Instrument names.
Maybe you should check it again on your system. Perhaps something changed from one version of Finale to another.

As we're on the Plugin Development-Forum already, let's talk about the mechanics behind that to clear things up...;-) you can get different volumes by applying playback effects to your expressions. There are two methods:
(1) applying a "volume" playback effect, which is a MIDI controller #7 and thus a channel message. For different volumes, you'll have to set your piano systems to different channels.
(2) applying a "velocity" playback effect which will change the velocity values. As each note has its own velocity value it doesn't matter on which channel it is sent. Thus you don't need different channels.
The pre-defined expression library which comes with Finale always used method #2. But each user is free to set up his expressions according to #1 even if I hardly see an advantage.

Well, I guess this old dog can still learn a few new tricks. I had set up templates with different channels quite some time ago (I don't recall why) and just continued to use them, but you guys are right - the channels don't have to be different. Thanks for setting me straight.
