| Posted By : NickG - 11/22/2016 10:43 AM | When using the Patterson Lite plug-in "Beam Over Barlines" it doesn't play back. What I have to do is, after initiating the plug-in, I select the hidden note created by the plug-in, unhide it and move it an octave up. I select "Custom Stem Tool" and create a blank stem, then move the note back over the existing original note. Then it plays back. Is there an easier way of doing this?

| Posted By : Zuill - 11/22/2016 3:00 PM | The JW Change plugin could do this easily, but it's not yet available for v25. The Speedy Edit Frame can do it. Just select Playback for the notes where the Playback box has been unchecked.

I remember the first version of Notator (even before Logic) being able to do this easily, as well. The trouble is that Finale is completely based on the bar as being THE unit: each bar is treated as a mini-database. You can actually see this (and tweak it) if you open the Edit Frame window. This makes copying operations easy but certain other operations, like beaming over barlines difficult. This has to be done using a dirty workaround: Patterson's beam over barlines plugin enters too many notes in the first bar and hides those notes in the second. This works until you change the layout, which requires a recalculation if there's a system break.

There are notation items that are perfectly cross-bar/system: slurs, for instance. After advocating it for so long, I concluded that the fact that beaming over barline/systems is so low on MakeMusic's list is more cultural than technical: it has always been viewed a non important notation feature.
And unfortunately Patterson beam plug-ins creates too much weird hidden stuff (the same could be said for piano type tremolos, another bandaid...)
