I'm using SM to assess singing in an aural skills class. Some of our melodies aren't tonal in the traditional sense--some are modal, while others are freely atonal. I'd like for SmartMusic to provide the first note of the melody to singers (as a "prep note") WITHOUT playing an irrelevant scale, chord, or arpeggio. (It's only confusing to students to hear a C major scale just before an atonal melody that begins on F-sharp.) Is there any way to configure a SM assignment so that it plays the first NOTE of a melody before the countoff without playing a chord, scale, or arpeggio?

Currently no. but are you writing the assignments? I have a solution if you are.

You can always play the keyboard in smartmusic for notes too. CTRL+K
