I am having a problem with the speedy entry using a MIDI keyboard. I can enter notes in without a problem, but when I try to enter a rest (by just pressing the duration using the numeric keypad) nothing happens. There is a number located in the lower left hand corner of the box on the staff. Does that have something to do with my problem? I can't make that number go away. I am using finale 2002. Thanks in advance for any help.

Lena:

You have Caps Lock on. The number at the lower left of the editing box indicates the currently active duration value—for example, if the number is a 6, the half-note is the current value. This means that Finale is going to enter everything as a half note until you change the value by pressing a different number on the key pad.

To enter a rest with Caps Lock on, just play a cluster of any three consecutive notes, like C, C sharp and D, once. That will place a rest of the current value into your score.

Otherwise, turn off Caps Lock and you can enter the rest "normally" by pressing the appropriate number.

Cheers.
