...I've been trying to play around with the FinaleScript tool, but it really seems incredibly limited to me.  I know it's probably a nice first step, but wouldn't you guys have been better off simply by giving us a macro recorder that would just record keystrokes and actions and then play them back?  Which the script tool can't even do!

Here's what I was trying to do.  With a SATB and piano accompaniment, I'd like to:

1. Select the first staff (soprano)
2. Change the midi parameter to continuous controller 10 for pan and pan it hard right.
3. Select all the other staffs and pan them left.
4. Save special as a wave file.
5. Come back to the file and select the second staff (alto) and pan it hard right.
6. Pan the others hard left.
7. Save special as a wave file.

Do this for all parts and I have a rehearsal CD for my choir with four tracks, one for each of the parts where the specific part is panned hard right so they can rehearse.

But FinaleScript can only do the very first step, none of the rest.

I really believe that this script ALONE would be a HUGE seller to many church composers out there.

Am I missing something?  Tell me I'm wrong, please!

I doubt that you are missing anything. Finalescript is new with 2k4, and I expect that there will be additional capabilities with the release of 2k5, annnouncement of which I understand to be about a week away, and I expect a ship date about a month after that.

...hey thanks for the answer, mj. Hopefully they will implement a very simple macro function which would allow you to record actions. This ought to help with a lot of things that the script function misses. Though I'm still kind of puzzled why they would have created a script function that can only call a few Finale actions rather than any of them.

Most likely because it's not possible currently to control all aspects of the Finale application through the Plugin Developer's Kit, AFAIK.

Something is still better than nothing in my opinion... (though everything is better than something, I do agree)

Dear Greator_SST and others--

Thank you for the suggestion of being able to record actions and events in FinaleScript. Neither version 1.0 with Finale 2004 nor 1.5 with Finale 2005 provide such functionality. I will be sure to document your request.

Sincerely,

Michael Johnson
