I know the tempo can be set via the box at the top, but that only sets either the initial tempo or the tempo of the section you want to play. What I'm looking for, however, is the ability to set the tempo for every section before I start playing the piece.

For example, in community band we're playing Armenian Dances by Reed. The second section of the piece (beginning at m. 30) is so much slower than what we're doing in band. Since we're at the point of running the entire piece, I would like to have that tempo recorded in SM so that I don't have to stop and readjust once I reach that point. Does that make sense?

FWIW, I'm using this an adult amateur, not associated with any school. I just have the basic subscription. I don't know if that makes a difference. It seems like this would be a helpful thing to be able to do, especially since terms like "Allegro" have a wide variety of metronome markings, and music so often changes tempo within a piece.

Have you checked to see if Armenian Dances is in the find music area?

Yes, Armenian Dances is in SmartMusic. My issue is that I can't do presets of the tempo within SmartMusic so that the section beginning at 30 is at the speed we're taking it. I can set that section individually, but if I do a straight run-through of the piece it will go at whatever tempo is programmed by SM.

So say a piece has 3 sections, and SmartMusic has programmed Section A at quarter note = 100, Section B at quarter note = 60, Section C at quarter note = 120. If I want to take Section B at quarter note = 80, I can't seem to pre-program the piece so that a run-through of the entire piece would have Section A at quarter note = 100, Section B at quarter note = 80, Section C at quarter note = 120. Instead, I would either have to suffer through the section going at 60, or I have to stop, find that section of the piece and change the tempo, then can finish with my run-through.

Does that clarify it at all? I'm having a hard time figuring out how to explain it.

Bclplyr,

Thanks for posting. Armenian Dances uses a MP3 recording for playback, the Tempo indications that you see in SmartMusic are the tempos recorded during the performance. In addition, adjusting the tempo in this piece adjusts the speed at which the MP3 plays back (increasing or decreasing the tempo of all sections). Unfortunately, SmartMusic does not have the ability to adjust sections of a MP3 to playback at different speeds during a continuous play through. This would be a great feature and something I will certainly pass along.

This feature is available in files that use MIDI playback. Below the microphone and speaker volume you should see a Customize button. This will allow you to change or add different settings, including the playback tempo for different sections of the piece. Please contact Customer Support if you have any more questions about these options, http://smartmusic.custhelp.com/app/.

Thanks for the reply, Seth! It makes sense now and I'll keep an eye out for those that are MIDI that I can adjust. And thanks for passing along the request.

Happy New Year -
