Posted By : OCTO. - 12/11/2016 12:54 PM | Friends, I am new to MIDI in Finale. I set up Percussion. But I need to change to Vibraphone. I tried to edit patch, with Expression, but I get whistles and maracas all the time. How to change the sound? By Staff Style?

Posted By : OCTO. - 12/11/2016 1:20 PM | YES! Ron, it solved. As said, I am VERY good in notation capabilities of Finale, and pre-school when I face MIDI editing.
A question: When I click on a measure and apply Instrument Change from the Utility, it is applied at that measure and continues until the next change instrument is applied, no? Or I need to select measures I want to have a particular instrument, prior changing?

Posted By : OCTO. - 12/11/2016 1:24 PM | Oh, it changes also the staff.... Can I keep the staff and everything else, and just change the sound?

Create an expression such as "to Vibraphone," then in the Expression Designer dialog box, select the Playback tab and click "Type." If you are using VST instruments and Aria, you'll want to select Channel here and input the channel which you have loaded the Vibes sound into Aria. If you are using MIDI, select Patch and GM #12 (for Vibes). |

Zuill The problem is that it edits my staff styles, transposition layout, clefs, staff type, etc. I need just another sound. I have tried to edit Patch but it doesn't work.

Can you post a simple sample of what you have with a description of what you want. If you don't use the utility, when you enter, you won't hear the new sound. This is one of the great benefits of the utility method.

Posted By : OCTO. - 12/12/2016 11:29 AM | Fred, I am not sure. In Menu: MIDI/Audio - Play Finale through VST - is selected. I don't care about the beauty of sound; I just don't need whisles and maracas instead of Vibra. If I can use just MIDI sounds it is also OK.

Me too. But for some reason our poster doesn't want Finale to change the staff and transposition to suit the vibraphone. Finale 25.2

Posted By : Motet - 12/12/2016 1:59 PM | There is usually a way to do what one wants in Finale, but I'm curious too about the objection that it "changes the staff." You can't write a vibraphone on a one-line percussion staff, and you should have a treble clef. Perhaps a picture, Octo. Posted By : OCTO. - 12/12/2016 4:53 PM | An example, I want TamTam to be played on two line staff for two different mallets. Change Instrument utility changes it to one line staff and it doesn't sound linke TamTam.
It is another issue, when I face a problem, for instance in naming the Vibraphone. I want to have the name Perc. 1 Vib.; since i have numerous percussion players in the score. Or I have 3 flutes, when flute 2 and flute 3 change to Alt Flute. In the score BOTH are alt flute, but if I have reduced score (hidden staff) how will conductor know what flute is playing, No 2 or no3? How do you fix that?
Another question, does the Change Instrument utility add a "Change to" information somewhere?? Or Muta to? Or whatever? Is there any plugin for that?

Posted By : Zuill - 12/12/2016 5:12 PM | As far as the 2 line Tam Tam, that is a special case. Regarding the Vibraphone name, that can be changed in the Score manager. Jari has a plugin for adding the name at the change. I do mine manually as I have preferences as to how I do it and doing it myself suits me.
Zuill
P.S.: As far as the Flute staff, I believe a Staff Style works for that most easily. Just for the name, I mean. "When all is said and done, more is said than done."

If you are using VST, you need to have the expression change the channel, not the patch. Load the VST sound you want into Aria, and then set the expression to select that channel. |
Posted By : OCTO. - 12/13/2016 1:59 AM | Thank you very much Zuill and Fred, now I understand completely the both ways, and both works!
One thing I have found a bit odd in Change Instrument utility is that it breaks Staff Groups. So every time I change the instrument I need to re-group them.
