When using 2 layers - if I assign an articulation for both layers then the notes and articulations collide with one another. Is there an approach within Finale 2002 or a plug-in that can automatically re-place the articulations to the correct position so they do not interfere with the notes on each layer?

If you mean like giving an expression to one layer, and not to another, then I don't believe so.
The layers all rely on one midi channel. If you go to Instrument List, and click the intrument, you can assign each layer a differrent channel.

Hi Jason,
Not completely automatic as such, but quite possible.
I (and I know many others) create three versions of each common articulation. So for accents, for example, I'll create 1) on note side 2) above note 3) below note. That way, I'll use 1) for most instances, and then, as in the example I've attached, use 2) for layer 1 and 3) for layer 2. I know they'll always be in the correct spot.
Of course, you have many other options as well, but this is what I like.

Why not just create two versions of the accent:
1) On note side
2) On stem side
That's what I do, and I haven't yet have need for more than two versions.

1st thing that comes to mind is if I'm mass-applying my articulations, regardless of which way the notes/stems are pointing at that time, that whatever I do, the articulation is still going to be above the note. Of course, usually when using layers, the upper layer generally would have stems up, but I might choose to copy this music (or even just the articulations) elsewhere, and still have them up, even if the music now isn't in layers.
Also, my ^ accent always goes above regardless of stem direction, though the exception is when the lower layer requires 'v' instead.
I do think that the articulation tool is great though - there are many ways of doing things, and particularly using the tool for non-articulation symbols!
