This is one of my pet peeves about Finale that has
bugged me for the longest and I'm hoping that
bringing it up now will remind Coda to fix this
problem at last. I use fonts I've created for ease of
use, especially for applying articulations. When
applying staccato dots and tenuto or stress marks,
I have to use special character settings for notes
that are on just the three inner lines (G,B,D or B,D,F
depending on the clef). All other articulations are
placed above or below the staff so there is no
problem. If I don't use these special characters for
the staccato and tenuto which must be positioned
between the staff lines, they will very frequently be
misplaced directly on a staff line. Sometimes they
are misplaced, sometimes not. The option to avoid
staff lines in the articulation designer dialog is not
dependable at all. What makes this a problem is that
when I extract parts from staves that have more
that one instrument, the articulations have to be
changed from stem side to note side, which means I
have to carefully go through each part and replace
every staccato and tenuto mark on notes that are
on the inner three lines. Am I the only one who
experiences this problem?
I'm sort of setting myself up to be disappointed in
advance for the next Finale upgrade because
experience has shown me that problems like these
are never addressed. I think anyone would agree
that fixing this would save hours of work for a large
score besides the fact that it shouldn't be
necessary to do this workaround anyway. What do
others do to solve this problem?

By the way, I forgot to mention, you can't trust the
screen display for tenuto and staccato marks that
fall on these inner lines. They may look OK on the
screen but then some will print correctly and most
of them won't. This is not a printer problem either. I
have a Zante 3G with 128mg of ram and Adobe
Postscript level 3. Every printer I have ever printed
on has had the same result.

Ephraim!
I had the same problems with staccato
dots, beginning from version 2000. I use
3 art. for dots; note side, and 2 on stem
side. The problem was on the noteside
articulation. I always assign these in the
zoom of 800-1000% since Coda still
haven´t fixed the problem with wrong
assignment in actual size (they say they
have). In that screensize everything
looked fine but in actual size I could see
that some dots wasn´t in the right place
and the printout showed it. In my case
the dots was moved to the notehead. It
occured in a random way because I could
copy that measure to another place and
that measure printed it as it should!
I have succeeded to remove this
problem by changing the values Default
Vertical Position and Handle Positioning.
There seem to be a critical "edge" for
theese values so that Avoid Staff Lines
won´t work. I could also select the
misplaced dots and move it with the
arrow, only one step and then it printed
OK!

Could you reveal your settings for Default
Vertical Position and Handle Positioning?
I am changing and fine tuning articulation settings for a template at the moment, and I have also seen that some dots and tenutos are placed in the notehead.

the problem of "misplaced" articulations occurs also in the Windows version of Finale (even in the last - 2002 - version).
when you place the articulation in the "normal" (1oo%)view size, it seems to be OK, but this is not with other view (200% and more), and so with printing. let's hope Coda will fix this problem with next versions

Hi Jesper!
Here are my values for a dot on the note
side. Let me first say that I use the size of
28 for my dots.
Default Vertical Position 14
Handles for both main and flipped 1, -2
So far no misalignment has occured and
these values worked on a file there I had
problems, but...you never know.

Is it possible to design a plugin that will check to see
that articulations are placed and print correctly?
With the amount of time it takes to check through
parts now for these things, I would be willing to pay
for a utility like this. I hate to be negative, but I
really don't believe Coda is going to make resolving
this problem a priority for the next version. In the
meantime I'm going to try Bjorn settings to see if
they will work with my font.

If you use "Avoid Staff Lines" you may use
the arrows to move a dot some pixels,
BUT it actually don´t move on the screen
until you use the arrows as many times
so it will jump to the open place between
lines (or over/under). Doing so should
make the "invisible move" that is needed
to get the assignment work. Therefore
you can move several dots at once using
Mass Mover>Change>Articulation
Assignment>Add To Deault
Position>V(ertical).
If you have a macroprogram like
QuicKeys you can make this a one-click
action.

By the way Bjorn, I noticed you said you zoom up to
800 to 1000% to apply these articulations. You
must have one of those cinamascope size monitors
you can watch "Ben Hur" on.

Perhaps I can see Chaplin´s Limelight. I
only have an old 17" screen. Would like a
bigger one but as a famous swedish
singer sings "it´s all ´bout the money".
Anyway it´s better now than when I started
work with Finale. Had a Mac SE. About 9"
screen.
