I put a message in the Finale scripts forum but I am not sure how often people check that so I am putting a message here too. Has anyone else had problems getting some of the commands to work in 2014.5?

I used to be able to get scripts to work when I was using Windows 7 and Finale 2010. Has something changed that has not been updated in the help file?

Which commands?

Zuill

P.S.: I stopped using Finalescript long ago as it was very unstable and caused a lot of crashing of Finale. However, since they overhauled it (I believe), I think it is more stable. I tend to use Jari's Lua scripts, even though I have no idea how to program them. I have figured out how to modify others' programs, though, for my use. With Finalescript, I often found that some operations would hang up. I tried to add delay commands to give Finale extra time to process the commands, but realized that every time I ran a script, it would lock up in a different place. To me, that is too finicky. It was easier to do things manually, rather than fuss with scripts.

OK. Thanks for the info. I thought I was doing something wrong. It was hanging on me too even after I would copy a command directly from the help file.

Here is the last version of the script I did before I gave up.

menu item "copy"
Select Staff 13
menu item "paste"
move layer 1 to layer 4
plug-in "single pitch"
type "G5"
Press "OK"
menu item "notesize"
type "75"
Press "OK"
menu item "Utilities/Stem direction/Up"
menu item "Utilities/Change/Ties"
click "tie direction"
Select radio button "over"
Press "OK"
plug-in "move rests"
near "move rests" type 7
Press "OK"

All I want to do be able to copy the rhythm of any staff (whoever has the lead line) to a staff not being used in the score (an extra staff below the drum part) and then place the rhythms in layer 4. Then, I will show current layer only and copy that into layer 4 of the drum part. I want to be able to give the drummer a simplified part with just rhythm hits but still get proper playback of the notes I have entered into the drum part. I go tit to work in 2010 when I was using Windows 7. Now I have 2015.5 and Windows 10 and it doesn't work anymore.

Thanks for your help with this. I really wish Finale had a plug-in to do this.

Unfortunately, you cannot just copy the contents of a pre-F2012 Finalescript file and paste it into a post F2011 Finalescript file.  You must re-enter it.  Ever since F2012, Finalescript is no longer a text file, but an XML file.  The copy/paste will not form the underlying XML correctly.  Instead of each source line being formed into its own destination line, all the source lines are concatenated into one long string for the destination.  Finalescript cannot handle this.  If you are proficient with editing XML, you can fix the issue without re-entering the source in a new script file, but it is usually easier to just re-enter it.

I have fixed the malformed XML in the attached XML.  It ran to completion when I tried it.  Download it and place it in the proper F2014.5 directory located here: "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\MakeMusic\Finale 2014.5\Finalescript".

Hope this helps.

I'm having a similar problem with Finale 2014.5. I routinely use a script to restore my background color, which hasn't kept my preference since about Finale 2007 and still doesn't in Finale 2015.5. In Finale 2011, I used this script:

Menu item “program options”
list “palettes and backgrounds”
click radio “solid color” near “Manuscript Texture”
click OK

In Finale 2014, I used this one:

menu item “Preferences”
highlight “Palettes and Backgrounds”
click “Palettes and Background”
click radio “solid color” near “Manuscript Texture”
button ok

The 2014 script that worked in Finale 2014 no longer works in Finale 2014.5. It hangs after Preferences appear. I've tried different syntax changes, but I can't get this to work again. Any suggestions?

For what David is trying to do, I find Jari's JW Change plugin does a much better job. It does most if not all of what is needed. You can then memorize all the steps into one item after doing them all one at a time initially.

gogreen,

Your script took longer to debug.  Some of the commands are different in F2014.5.

Attached is the XML.  Place it in the proper directory here: "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\MakeMusic\Finale 2014.5\Finalescript".

Is this the right-click menu?

I just left-clicked on it and it opened the XML file. I then chose the option to save the file that was opened.

My W10, using IE as my browser, gives me a right click pop-up menu with "Save Target As...".  That's what I do.  You might be using Firefox/Chrome, where you would use "Save Link As...".  Should work too.

Zuill's idea of left clicking and opening the XML in IE/Firefox/Chrome, then saving will also work.

No, not that I am aware of.  I found out through the college of hard knocks, i.e. looking at the XML and seeing what a mess it was.

I trust you are calling the fact that you cannot successfully copy/paste, ridiculous, and not my assertion!  If the copy source script is pure text, as are pre-F2012 Finalescript editor window scripts, or scripts copied from this forum, for example, you will not get a successful Finalescript with a paste into a Finalescript editor window that expects underlying XML, such as F2012 and beyond, even though it "looks" OK in the editor window.  Such is not the case with copying from a F2012 and beyond Finalescript editor into another F2012 and beyond Finalescript editor window.  The underlying XML is intact and interpretable by the Finalescript engine.

Yes, I was calling the fact ridiculous. But can't you open and old script in F2011, copy the source to the clipboard, then create a new script in F2014 and paste from the clipboard, just as if you had typed it in? Why wouldn't that work?

Sorry, blush I stand corrected.  It will work OK.  But you cannot just copy the lines of a script from this forum and paste them into a new post-F2011 Finalescript editor window.  You would think that would work too, but it doesn't.  You can also copy the contents of a F2011 <scriptname>.txt file and paste it into a post-F2011 Finalescript editor window, but there will be some extraneous lines preceding the actual script that will need to be removed.  It should be fairly obvious which lines to remove.

I downloaded and tried the plug-in. I can get it to do most of what I want but I can't figure out how to combine all the steps and then save them as a sequence to do all the commands at once.

As far as I can tell, it is not working correctly in 2014.5. I am using v1.03.

I don't have time right now to experiment, but I will try it later tonight.  The sequence editor of JW Change is not very intuitive or user friendly, but it does work.  I have done it before.  Maybe someone with experience will chime in.  Maybe even JW.

It does for me.

Problems copying and pasting a script from the forum are likely due to the copied text being HTML. If you first paste it into Notepad and then copy and paste from that, it should work. (Ideally the Finalescript editor should behave like Notepad and paste as plain text, but it sounds like maybe it doesn't.) If you're having trouble, Arthur, you might try the Notepad trick as well.

Relieved to hear that copy and paste from F2011 to F2014 works. I will do that rather than fooling with XML.

Thanks. I eventually figured it out. It works great. Too bad there is no setting to flip ties up. Then it would be perfect for what I need.

Now I have a new problem. Finale won't space the hits correctly when notes are in other layers on the same beat. I try and drag them into place manually and it drags them back to the correct position. OUCH. I guess I will have to have two drum staves when I want to use this kind of notation. One for playback and the other for what the drummer needs to see.

By pasting the forum text into a Hex editor, I have verified that there are no HTML tags in the text copied from the forum or any other characters to set it apart from plain text.  It is just plain text with 0D 0A hex bytes, CR LF, to separate the lines.  It appears, however, that you are on to something.  If you paste into Notepad first, I use Notepad++, then copy again from Notepad and paste into the Finalescript editor, then everything will be OK.  Without this extra copy/paste step, you definitely will get a script that looks OK in the editor, but will not run.

If you copy from F2011 and paste to F2014, be aware of the extraneous characters I spoke of before.

Charles, the Windows clipboard can contain formatting in addition to the text itself, depending on the application it came from. There may not be tags in the text you copy from the browser window, but the clipboard knows it's HTML because it comes from a browser, with information about font, alignment, color, etc. That's why you can copy from a browser window, paste it into MSWord, and have all that formatting retained. It only pasted the text itself into your hex editor, but there is more to the data in the clipboard than the characters themselves.

The contents of the clipboard can also be, among others, rich text (formatted, e.g. MSWord), a graphic, or plain text with no formatting. This last, plain text, is what Finalescript and Notepad traffic in, which is why the method of going from browser to Notepad to Finalescript works.

May I put in a plug here for ClipMate, a $35 program that extends the Windows clipboard? I find it extremely useful for the work I do, well worth the cost. It remembers more than one clip, lets you make libraries of permanent clips, paste a series of clips in succession, and a lot of other stuff. Very powerful.

One of its functions is to turn formatted text into plain text, so for the problem at hand one could copy the script from the browser, type a hotkey to remove formatting from the clip, then paste into Finalescript.

I was not aware of all that.  I'll have a look at the app.

Concerning copying and pasting in Finalescript, Finale does not allow either for me. Copying text first into Notepad also produces only the same three options when I try to paste text into the Finalescript editor. What are you doing that I'm not doing?

gogreen,

That pop-up dialog is, at least, caused by right clicking in the editor window.  Just left click to dismiss it and you should be OK.  If you are looking for a command to paste by right clicking, it won't happen.  Do as Motet says, CTRL-V to paste.

Yeah, CTRL-V works. Thanks, Charles and Motet. But how come I never tried that before? I've always right-clicked to copy and paste in every other Windows application. Why, then, is Finale different?

Finalescript doesn't use the standard Windows editing dialog, which is also why it's kind of funky-looking.
