Here's a tiny new plug-in that (as suggested in another thread here) replaces quotes ("........") with curly quotes in all Lyrics in the file. This plug-in comes in 2 versions, one with a simple user interface (with error/info messages and so on) and one totally silent plug-in (suitable for batch processing in Finalescript).

Grab the one(s) you need and put it in the Plug-ins folder (or any of its subfolders). Restart Finale.

Should work on Finale for Windows, versions 2007 and later.

Let me know how it works.

Jari

I use your Space Systems plug-in for Mac. Works very well! Please don't forget the Mac people in your future work.

Until then, Mac users may like to know that they can achieve the same result by copying the contents of the Edit Lyrics window into a text editor such as TextWrangler, which can "Smarten Quotes", and then paste back to Finale. You'll need to do this for each verse/section/chorus. Note that you can type smart quotes by a combination of <alt><shift> and square brackets []. (Left bracket does double quotes, with or without <shift>; right bracket does single quotes similarly.)

Jari,

I work with a large number of Finale files of hymns, many containing single & double curly quotes.  Your plug-in is intriguing because I had to devise my own workarounds to accommodate them: inserting special characters (alt+0145, alt+0146, alt+0147 & alt+0148) & then changing the font to Arial Italic.  (The lyrics are all standardized in Palatino Linotype font.)  This created occasional space problems when a curly quote is before or after a tall letter like "I".  To get around this I also had to insert hard spaces & change the font to only 4 or 5 point.  All in all, it was very cumbersome process & I could not figure out a way to totally automate it through Finalescript.

The files I work with sometimes also have quotes around text in various text boxes.  It was decided that trying to get these all correct during the hymnal project was not worth the effort & consequently was skipped.  I am still working with the files, however, creating instrumental versions of all of them.  With 190 hymns & 14 designated instrumental versions, there are still almost 2700 files that I could incorporate curly quote corrections, as long as it is effective, foolproof & fully automatable using Finalescript to call the plug-in.

Please provide your thoughts on this.

Thank you,
Randy
