| Posted By : Rick_F - 12/23/2016 5:28 PM | Can't figure out what is going on. I've been working with Finale 2014.5.6359 and it keeps crashing. I've been busy xposing some bass clef to treble clef euphonium parts... 4 pages long. During the 2 or 3 hours of entering notes (in bass clef), it's been crashing. After it crashes I click 'submit report' but that fails too. Not sure what is going on.
I don't know if it has something to do with the latest Windows 10 update last week or a bug in the program itself. It seems to crash when I use the 'shape' button to add slurs, crescendos, etc. Not every time, but during the 3 hours it crashed about 10 times.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

See what might work and let us know what happens.

C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\MakeMusic\Finale 2014.5
Rename finale.ini to something else, relaunch Finale, and see if things are better. This will create a new finale.ini and reset all your preferences to their defaults. If things don't improve, you can rename the old one back to restore your preferences.

| Posted By : Zuill - 12/24/2016 1:17 PM | I am guessing it might be a sound driver issue. If it is set to ASIO, then change it to Direct Sound. If you can't even open Finale, then you can edit the FinMIDI file before launching Finale. It could also be a sample rate issue. 2014.5 allowed differen rates, but I found better success by sticking to 44,100.

My wife has Win 10, along with the many troubles I have seen reported, not the least of which seems to be lack of control over aspects of updates. One especially annoying issue is that she keeps getting a dark screen because Microsoft updates the video driver to its generic one. We have to keep rolling it back to the manufacturer's driver. Can't Microsoft leave well enough alone?

The automatic update options available before W10 are no longer available. For Enterprise, Pro, and Education versions, you can defer updates (Settings->Update & Security->Windows Update-Advance Options). Home versions cannot defer updates. You can turn off automatic Windows updates in W10 by disabling the Windows Update Service (Computer Management->Services and Applications->Services->Windows Update). Of course this is not recommended by Microsoft. If you do, then the next time to turn it back on, you will have to install all updates that have been missed, since updates are a cumulative process. It may take you several rounds of updates before you get back to the latest state of all updates. It is best not to bother with turning off all updates. It's just the way things are done now. In trying to defeat the system, you are just asking for trouble.
This having been said, there is however, an MS troubleshooter available to block unwanted updates called "Show or Hide Updates". Hidden updates will not be installed. This is similar to the way prior Windows versions worked. Go here to download the tool. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930
You can also block automatic device driver updates (Control Panel->System->Advanced System Settings->Hardware->Device Installation Settings).
Hope these tips can help you with an errant W10 installation. As I mentioned earlier, so far, I for one, have not had any problem using W10 with automatic updates.

My opinion is that, unless you're an expert or have an unusual situation like Zuill's wife, you're foolish to do so. Microsoft's "mandatory updates" for Windows 10 Home seems reasonable to me.

Well, for being a self proclaimed computer dumb-bell, you have used a utility known and used for the most part by only computer geeks. Using the group policy editor is yet another way to turn off automatic updates, but beware the afore mentioned long term ramifications of such a policy.
