It is interesting how many first time forum users seem to post in the Finale Plug-ins folder rather than the Notation folders - could this be because of the forum names?

Especially for those users from non-English speaking countries, seeing these titles: ...

... it's not particularly hard to see why they zero in on those forums that actually mention the word, "Finale".

Maybe you should rename the two "Notation - xxx" folders to "Finale Family - xxx", or even just plain "Finale - xxx"! It would save a whole lot of moderator intervention and thread locking ...

Indeed, Wiggy, though I suppose it's kinda on-topic in at least one sense! :-)

Anyhow, I've been thinking about it, and it seems the current catergories need brushing up, not just their names. The two "Notation" forums are dreadful catch-alls, arbitrarily divided on platform, even though most messages and threads would be equally application both to Windows and the Mac. So how about:

Finale: Notation

Finale: Playback

Finale: Installation

Finale: Bugs and Features

SmartMusic

Developer's Corner

"Notation" would be anything to do with printing, layout, how to get particular music effects like glissandi, feathered beams, or whatever, with an emphasis on printing, PDF creation, and web publishing - ie, the "engraving" aspect of all versions of Finale. Most posts would be platform independent.

"Playback" would be anything to do with MIDI, Garritan, Kontakt, Aria, saving as Audio, synchronising with QuickTime, and so on - ie, the "sequencer/DAW" aspect of all versions of Finale. Again, most posts would be platform independent.

"Installation" would cover the business of - er - installation, as well as authorisation, trashed preferences, dog-ate-my-DVD, and might need Windows and Macintosh variants.

"Bugs and Features" would be where people like "Ebony Ivory" could bang on about failings in the software, or things which just work in a dumb or misfunctional way. By taking this discussion away from the other forums, it would leave those others friendly and uncluttered, so that people like "Saffron" could get on with discussing music and Finale! :-)

"SmartMusic" does just what it says on the box.

"Developer's Corner" could take on the rather defunct forums that currently cover Plug-In development in general (this forum), and Finalescript in particular.

What do you (or others) think?

Brian

Wow, it's great to have an endorsement from one of the longest-serving Forum members! Thanks! :-)

You're welcome!
Personally I think there is a great need for a Playback Forum. Playback has become more complicated as at least three different companies provide the software at work in audio playback.
It needs more focus here.

Jesper

They work for me, too.
Brian, Why not post this over on one of the other fora? More people would see it, and could add support if they like the idea.

Thanks Mike - it might be worth doing, though "Ebony Ivory" suggested something similar a couple of years ago, and got shot down in flames by the usual suspects! ;-)

But those "usual suspects" have been conspicuous by their absence, lately, so maybe it's worth another try.

As of today, 11 out of the most recent 25 threads on this forum are locked - "by forum policy". That's a pretty poor success rate for posters, and surely lends weight to my suggestion that some forum renaming and reorganisation is long overdue, to help people find the right locations for their queries!

Any thoughts, moderators and sysops?

Well fancy that! :-)

They say, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease", and I have (or rather, my former alter-ego, Ebony Ivory, has) been called a "squeaky wheel" more than once on this Forum.

It's good to see sensibly proffered suggestions been taken up - thanks to the Forum Admins for this one!

Now to get back to squeaking about some long-term issues in Finale itself! lol

Have you been lurking (ie, viewing as a guest), or are you completely new to the Forum, in which case, I'm even more intreagued by your comment!

There seem to be quite a lot of posts by newcomers, which seem vaguely relevant, but which also include links to non-relevant websites.

Spam much?
