Posted By : Mark Adler - 11/17/2015 1:49 PM | Good afternoon everyone!
I’m pleased to announce that Finale 2014.5 is now available for download. Finale 2014.5 is a free upgrade for all Finale 2014 owners.
Finale 2014.5 incorporates new features, bug fixes, and significant modernization of Finale code.
The installation of Finale 2014.5 will not change your existing Finale 2014 installation, but installs as a new separate application. There is no need to delete or uninstall 2014d before installing 2014.5.
Features added in this release include:
- Options to automatically create double barlines before key changes
- The ability to change sample rates
- A means to quickly and easily reorder staves
- Enhanced MusicXML and EPUB support
- Options to automatically create double barlines before key changes
- The ability to save SmartMusic accompaniments with premium VST/AU instrument sounds, including the provided Garritan sounds
- Updated SmartScore X2 Lite scanning software, with many improvements in core musical features such as beams, augmentation dots, and tuplets
All plug-ins provided with the update have also been modernized, and many have been enhanced, including Finalescript, Global Staff Attributes, Latin Percussion, TG Tools Lite, Band-in-a-Box Auto-Harmonizing and more. Finale’s documentation was also overhauled, offering vastly improved search results and compatibility with any device, including smartphones and tablets. (This could allow you, for example, to have Finale’s documentation displayed on your iPad while you work on your laptop or desktop computer.)
The release also resolves several dozen bugs, prioritized by customer requests. A complete list of what’s included in Finale 2014.5 for PC users is here
You will be directed to your update to Finale 2014.5 by opening Finale 2014 and clicking Help > Check for Updates. Mark F. Adler Notation Product Manager MakeMusic, Inc. |

The links take you to the correct installer. The installers on the Windows side are all new, so behave a bit differently than in the past. Once you get past the initial Finale Bundle Installer, you'll arrive at the Finale 2014.5 Setup window which installes the app on your computer. Mark F. During the installation process, there is a notice to the effect that the new version will need to be registered and I'll be prompted to do so when I bring it up the first time. I brought it up and there is no prompt to register. In fact, I can't find a way to register 2015.5.
2015.5 seems to know its serial number so is it already registered? I plan to test 2015.5 for awhile, then delete 2014d. IS there a reason I shouldn't do that? Finale 2014d on a Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus 64-bit Windows 8.1a Intel i7 CPU @ 1.80GHz 8.0GB main memory 256GB solid state disk |

They don't appear to be loaded into the scores, but they're still there, without being reinstalled... or Steinway Basic is - that's the only one I tried. +1. This is not very clear to the user. If it's an update (it's not) then it should appear when you search for updates. If it's a standalone (it is) then the installer should not use the name of a previous version. As it is now, it's not really clear to the user which it is. |

I didn't get any VST sounds at first, and was wondering what was up. I then noticed the Audio setting was ASIO. I changed it to Direct Sound and there came my VST playback.
Anyway, haven't had much time, but I did test the HP start/stop time bug, and it is STILL THERE. Ouch!!!
Next, I will test the glissando bug.

Posted By : Fred G. Unn - 11/17/2015 5:42 PM | Also, somewhat confusing is Preferences/open/open older documents as "Untitled". Finale 2014 files do not open as untitled in 2014.5 adding to the confusion of whether this is an update or new release. 2014.5 files seem to open in regular 2014 though. I haven't tested this thoroughly obviously, but if this backwards compatibility isn't 100% that could be a problem if 2014 docs don't open as "Untitled" to warn the user. |

Posted By : Charles Lawrence - 11/17/2015 5:45 PM | I'm still downloading, and have not been able to install yet, but if the install of F2014.5 goes into its own directory as indicated, I suspect that unless MM has changed things, the installation of all Garritan library AUXILLIARY FILES will have to be done over per these instructions. In the past, these files are NOT placed in the proper place by the install. There is no mention of F2014.5 in the instructions, so it remains to be seen, my me, whether this extra step is necessary.

Posted By : Fred G. Unn - 11/17/2015 5:55 PM | Ok, here's the first annoying NEW bug that I've found. In 2014 create a file that has some hidden notes. (O in Speedy.) open it in 2014.5 with Preferences-open-Hidden Note Conversion-Keep the Notes Hidden selected. 2014.5 shows the hidden notes at the selected "Hidden Object Shading" regardless of what is selected in the Hidden Note Conversion box. This is quite annoying. Are hidden notes staying hidden for anyone else? Why are 2014 files being "converted" anyway? If they are being converted, shouldn't they open as Untitled? The visual clutter of hidden notes is a fairly big issue for me. I'd like them to stay hidden. |

Thanks. And for anybody else confused by it, here is the procedure:
1) login to your MakeMusic account. 2) Under Existing Customers, enter your email address (or username) and password, and click LOG IN. 3) On the My Software page, find your Finale 2014 registration and click Download. 4) Click DOWNLOAD FOR WINDOWS. 5) Follow the onscreen instructions to download and install Finale 2014.5.

Mine sound card is set to 48000, so that is why I guessed that.

I guess I need to search harder for something that did get fixed. Zuill The Readme lists a bunch of fixes. There were a couple of things on that list that will help me, if they actually are what they sound like.
Taking the optimist's view, the positive news here is that they have made significant changes to the product without completely breaking everything. I do have a new problem that playback goes dead after a successful export to WAV. But mostly, the product seems pretty stable. It is a pretty scary thing when a new staff takes over an old code base.
As they are able to fix some problems now, it iw probably worthwhile to make sure the main problems are documented. I know this has been done before, but the company has been through a lot of changes.Post Edited (CraigP) : 11/18/2015 8:13:42 AM (GMT-6) |

What's amazing to me is that many of the HP functionality that was broken in 2014 still is broken. In other words, it used to work, got broken, and remains broken. There are many playback glitches that just make for frustrating playback.
Anyway, it seems they did more about stripping features and plugins, or changing their location, but left many things broken. A good example is the repeated note bug with HP. The only solution is to turn off to incorporate start/stop MIDI data.
I read the list, but not much there.

Fixes in Finale 2014.5 Copying music • Using the filter to copy items other than notes and rests from one staff to another no longer shifts music to a different octave when Respect Instrument Ranges is selected in the Preferences - Edit dialog box. Crescendo/decrescendo markings • Hairpins can now be edited in measures with a whole rest in a time signature smaller than 4/4. Finalescript • A wide variety of defects and performance issues have been addressed, resulting in a new version of the Finalescript plug-in that is more stable and predictable. • Finalescript now interfaces properly with the Score Manager. • Finale no longer crashes when right-clicking multiple selected commented lines. • The Finalescript Editor no longer reappears at seemingly random locations after being repositioned and closed. • The add staves command now adds staff names when specified in a script. • The search and replace command now works correctly for fonts in articulations. • scripts are now placed in the correct folder and script names are now displayed correctly when duplicating a script. • Deleting a script no longer results in focus issues for the Finalescript Palette and the script is removed from the Plug-ins > Finalescript submenu. • The save dialog box command now displays the Save As dialog box. • The open command now includes support for Finale 2014 template files. • Duplicating or deleting a script no longer disables the buttons in the Finalescript Palette. Global performance improvements • Copying and pasting or inserting in some documents is significantly faster. Human Playback • Human Playback now correctly interprets fp (forte-piano) markings for performance. • An issue where Human Playback preferences would not apply to VST plug-ins other than the included Garritan instruments has been corrected. • An "open" text expression now correctly triggers the non-muted keyswitch for Garritan jazz brass instruments. • Finale no longer switches Volume (CC#11) values with Key Velocity (CC#7) values when exporting MIDI files. • Custom user-defined options are now displayed in the Apply Human Playback command in the MIDI tool menu. Inserting measures • Inserting a measure stack on a later page in Page View no longer causes Finale to scroll back to the first page. Linked parts • Finale no longer crashes when unlinking lyrics baselines using the context menu. • You can now undo adding a measure when the measure was added while viewing a part. • Using a slash in a part name no longer results in an error message when extracting parts. Lyrics • Lyrics using fixed size fonts no longer cause lyric collisions when music spacing is applied. Measure numbers • CTRL-clicking a measure when a different measure is highlighted now correctly displays the measure number on the clicked measure. Multiple monitors • Dialog boxes are no longer displayed on the incorrect monitor when the order of the screens is reversed. • Finale no longer launches on an unavailable screen when that monitor is disconnected. MusicXML • Exported MusicXML files now support linked graphics in JPEG, PNG, GIF, and BMP format. • Backward repeats that jump to non-existent measures no longer cause MusicXML export to fail. • Export is now more accurate when the Redisplay key signature if only mode is changing option is deselected in the Document Options – Key Signatures dialog box. • Many Finale notation elements that cannot export to MusicXML are now marked with XML processing instructions in the exported MusicXML file. opening and saving files • The open/Save File dialog boxes have been updated to be resizable on all Windows operating systems. Pickup measures • Copying all the music from one staff to another in a document with an empty pickup measure no longer produces offset results. Plug-ins • Using the Resize Noteheads plug-in to change the size of only normal noteheads no longer causes normal noteheads to change to the note shape of other notes in a chord. • The Cautionary Accidentals plug-in now accurately adds parentheses to notes with accidentals when instructed. • The Add Cue Notes plug-in now adds the name of the cued instrument to the cue. • The Global Staff Attributes plug-in now accurately reflects current staff attributes, including the recently- added Redisplay Accidentals in Other Layers Within Measures option. Preferences • Finale now respects the state of the Save Preferences When Exiting Finale option in the Preferences - Save dialog box. • Finale now respects the state of the Clean Up File Data option in the Preferences - open dialog box. Printing and PDFs • Using a slash character in a part name no longer creates damaged PDF files. SmartMusic accompaniments • SmartMusic markers are now created in a much more reliable manner. Speedy Entry • Showing or hiding an accidental no longer requires two keystrokes. • Pressing 0 on the numeric keypad now activates the Speedy Entry frame after switching documents. Text • The right ALT key now functions properly within an Edit Text dialog box. "This is me helping."

I realize SmartMusic is important to many, but I am going to say that the HP playback problems affect SmartMusic as well, and should be fixed. How many posts do we get here about repeated notes not playing back? Many. And that isn't fixed.
I guess MM didn't know that that was a problem for many, even though it was reported many times to them.
I did read the list, several times.

As I suspected in my previous post, regarding Garritan libraries that do not come bundled with F2014.5, after installing F2014.5, you must properly install the AUXILLIARY files in order to interface the libraries with Finale. The link for instructions and the auxiliary files was posted earlier. Just use F2014.5 instead of F2014 in the instructions. Otherwise, they are now accurate, as far as Windows is concerned. I cannot speak for Macs.
The Garritan Instruments for Finale (GIFF) library had a revision in the XML file available from MM for F2014.d. This revised file, fortunately was carried forward in F2014.5.
I only have the GPO4.02 library, so I can only address it. The soundmap file provided in the auxiliary file (GPO4.ZIP) from the MM website, unfortunately, still is full of typos and omissions. I have corrected the file in the past. If you have it, place it in the appropriate directory in place of GPO4Full.soundmap provided in the ZIP. For anyone using GPO4 who does not have the corrected file, I will be glad to email it to you. Request it via my email link in the left hand panel.

I wonder if I am missing something. I have the Garritan Jazz & Big Band 3 library. I didn't have to do anything special. Those instruments are all recognized in 2014.5.
I did have to update my VST folders list to pick up other VSTs though. |

But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. I am talking about an actual muting of the following note(s). Unless HP preferences is set to ignore Start/Stop MIDI data, this can be a problem. And the MIDI data I'm talking about is just the stock data related to Speedy Entry. Since applying the plugin (now a feature) to Apply HP doesn't have the problem, it sure seems they can fix the real time playback.

The referenced instructions have similar instructions for JABB3, so I am confused if it works for you without having to do what it says. I tried to follow that Garritan document http://garritan.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5651/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNDQ3ODk3NDkwL3NpZC91dEJCR1JCbQ%3D%3D
but it refers to files that don't exist anywhere on my Windows machine. The document refers to JABB3 appearing in the device list. This has NEVER appeared in the device list for me. What appears is the Aria player. When I launch the Aria player, I can load in JABB3 instruments. It almost seems like there is some other mode of operation that doesn't use Aria.
The Garritan document also refers to JABB3 appearing in the Sound Map Priority box. Again, I don't think this EVER appeared. The only thing there is Softsynth. I don't know that this matters, as I assign my instruments manually and generally work from a template that has the instruments set up already. Everything seems to be working as before, but maybe I never had JABB3 properly installed. |

However, I now keep getting the pop-up when opening 2014 that there is a new version (2014.5). I suppose I should disable the automatic update feature in 2014. Maybe there's nothing they could do about the updater recognizing 2014.5 is already installed.

The problem with that is that the changes in 2014.5 are there, which could confuse someone still using 2014d. For example, the new manual shows the Apply HP Playback in the MIDI Tool. However, in 2014d, it is not a built-in feature, but a plugin.
I am guessing this might cause a lot of confusion for users not having 2014.5 installed. This is a bizarre approach, since it is being touted that they are 2 separate programs. However, they share a manual that shows things as they are in 2014.5, not 2014d. Hmmmm.

Craig,
From what you describe, you definitely do not have JABB3 interfaced with Finale like it should be. You can of course, as you have described, use JABB3 manually and assign instruments to the Aria player, but you are missing out on what Finale can do automatically, i.e. load up the Aria player per your choice of instruments. And no, all recent Finale versions use the Aria player for playback using VST. There is no other player bundled in Finale anymore. You should have JABB3 available as a "Device" in the Score Manager, and if chosen, then under "Sound", you should see a hierarchy dropdown of all the sounds available in the library. You certainly should be able to set the soundmap priority as well.
The instruction sheet you reference is correct. What version of Finale are you using? I assume the new F2014.5. All the directories referred to in the instruction should be there except they are called F2014.5 instead of F2014. MM has not updated the instruction specifically for F2014.5, but you can just substitute F2014.5 everywhere there is an F2014. BTW, the F2014 directories are there as well, since F2014.5 is not an update, but its own standalone product that can run concurrently with F2014 or any other version you may have installed. You also must download the JABB3.ZIP file located at the bottom of the instruction sheet. Unzip it somewhere, because it contains the auxiliary/support files referenced in the instruction. It sounds like you have never done this important step. The interfacing of a Garritan library to Finale, other than GIFF, must be done manually, and is not, at this time, done automatically during the installation of the library sound files. Stop Finale, place the support files in the directories as instructed, and restart Finale. You should see JABB3 interfaced to Finale correctly then.
Good luck. If you still have problems, let us know.

Unzip it somewhere, because it contains the auxiliary/support files referenced in the instruction. It sounds like you have never done this important step. The interfacing of a Garritan library to Finale, other than GIFF, must be done manually, and is not, at this time, done automatically during the installation of the library sound files.
OK. That's probably the answer. I don't remember ever doing that. I guess I just assumed that if I installed both products JABB3 and Finale from the same supplier, they would work together without a bunch of manual hacking. Silly me.
Thanks for the pointers. This might make life a little easier after I get it sorted out. ===
On edit, I did install those extra files. It does make for a more seamless operation. Definitely fewer steps when setting up a new score.
I have grown accustomed to using multiple Aria instances (one for reeds, one for brass, one for rhy, etc.) It isn't really necessary, but sometimes it is a little easier to adjust the mix for the entire section at once, and sometimes I set different reverb levels or other effects on each instance. But I can still do that the hard way if it is needed. This seamless mode is definitely the way to start, and it more in line with how Sibelius manages instruments. Thanks for setting me straight.Post Edited (CraigP) : 11/19/2015 9:29:46 PM (GMT-6) |
Posted By : Charles Lawrence - 11/19/2015 11:19 AM | Silly you Craig! Why would you ever think such a thing! Seriously though, this is something MM should fix, since they now own the Garritan product line. Before that, it was perfectly reasonable for Garritan not to automatically interface with any particular software, but to have an external interfacing procedure for a given software such as Finale.

Posted By : Charles Lawrence - 11/19/2015 1:50 PM | AFAIK, if you have not done it for F2014 and F2014.5, then you are not interfacing your Garritan library properly with Finale. You can still use the library by loading the Aria player manually with sounds or ensembles, but Finale can do it for you if properly interfaced. Just out of curiosity, in the Score Manager, do you see your libraries in the "Device" dropdown, and the sounds for a given library in the "Sound" dropdown? You should. If not, then it is not configured properly.

Posted By : Zuill - 11/19/2015 10:01 PM | I see this in the readme about 2014.5:
"Custom user-defined options are now displayed in the Apply Human Playback command in the MIDI tool menu."
This option was always available, but it was in the dropdown list. Now, they automatically appear, and are not an item in the list. I suppose this is an improvement.
Also, I did test their mention of fixed lyric size spacing properly. I remember this as a bug Mike Rosen had brought to light. That fix is a good thing.
I also notice that editing mixed fonts in lyrics no longer results in odd characters appearing out of nowhere. That is a valuable fix.

Yes, I checked that out today. A good thing.
In addition, when you view the page under a higher magnification, the lyrics in the lyric window are enlarged, as well. And it seems that the cursor no longer jumps back to the top when you want to click-assign from the middle of the window. All in all, improvements to lyrics are working, for which I'm grateful! You can set up multiple instances of the Aria player for your "mixing" in the Score Manager. Just choose different banks (Aria players) and channels (1-16) for your mixes. If you don't see Bank and Channel, then turn them on with the "Customize View" button.

Unfortunately, in Windows, if I highlight a syllable in the Lyrics Window, then click assign, it always enters one syllable to the left. This is not changed from 2014d. It is really frustrating. I should report it.

P.S.: The bug in Click Assign is actually more inconsistent than what I said. It often jumps around in other unpredictable ways. This is not new to 2014.5, but didn't get fixed with the other Lyric improvements.

"The Add Cue Notes plug-in now adds the name of the cued instrument to the cue."
2014d added the name, so I don't know why this is mentioned. In 2014, the name was added, but no accidental (as in Trumpet in B appearing instead of Bb). In 2014.5, it now shows Bb, but the flat is actually a letter b. One needs to edit the expression to change the b to a flat.

When copying a copyable staff style in a score, it doesn't copy in the part. That is a huge bug that has been reported and discussed for years. That makes for lots of extra work.

Posted By : Zuill - 11/20/2015 2:23 PM | This is a message to MakeMusic:
If you are going to replace the 2014 manual with the 2014.5 manual, fine. However, if you are now including a video about how the manual works, as you did, you might want to have the look of the manual match the look of the New manual. The video looks like it was made in 2014, not 2014.5. Just a suggestion, to alleviate what has already become a confusing scenario for user with 2014 who now have a manual for 2014.5.

I am curious about the open File look. The manual has a picture of the 2014 open File look. However, the attached picture is what I see. What's up? I read nothing about this in the manual or the readme. The Select Button has a drop down that says Select and Show Previous Versions.

I'm going from memory, and it has failed me before, but I seem to recall the release notes saying the window is now resizable, but AFAICT, that was so in F2014 as well. I do not see the dropdown in the Select button on my system! I wonder what goes here!
