I have charts written in various previous
versions of Finale and have found some
difficulty in using simple note entry in
Finale 2002b to edit the duration of a
single note in some of these charts.
Sometimes it will, other times it won't and
will complain with a Mac alert 'beep'.
Is this a known bug or are there settings I
should be checking to make sure that it's
possible to edit the note?

When you say 'edit the duration of a single note', do you mean the notated value (e.g, change a quarter into a dotted quarter), or do you mean the playback value (the length of time that the note is actually sounded)?

Have you unchecked the menu item
"Check for extra notes"? Otherwise, you
may be trying to enter too many beats per
measure and getting the alert.

I mean to change the notated value.
When I select an eighth note from the
simple palette and superimpose it over a
quarter note, it usually works fine but
occasionally will complain.
I assume this is not a documented bug
as no one else here seems to have
noticed it.

I think Brad gave you your answer. There's a 'Check for Extra Notes' checkbox in both the Simple Entry Tool > Simple Menu and the Speedy Entry Tool > Speedy Menu.
