I found a solution. If I create a slur as a shape expression rather than as a smart shape, the background remains masked. Thank you for your responses. Eric

I'm creating finger numbers with the text expression tool in order to add an opaque background. I'd like to place the numbers mid slur. I've selected 0 line thickness and checked the opaque box....
