Hello all,

I was wondering if there is a way to access the "export to MusicXML" feature of Finale via an API call? I am just trying to figure out how to automate the export of an MUS file to XML.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

What is the context of automating the export? Is this something that you want to do from your own plug-in? If you want to do a batch export or import of MusicXML files, the Dolet 4 for Finale plug-in will do that:

If you can explain more what you are trying to do, that will be helpful in trying to figure out an approach that will work for you.

Hello Michael.

Actually, I was trying to convert an MUS file to XML and then store that in a database which could then be queried for the XML and the XML query result be imported into any application that supports MusicXML (Finale included). Thus, it would also be nice to be able to automate the XML import as well.

This is simply for a non-commercial, web-based project that I'm working on. The idea is that the user could select a song and the corresponding MusicXML for that song be automatically imported or converted into an application of their choice that supports MusicXML. Obviously, this could go the other way as well (ie. the user store an MUS file and that be converted to XML).

This may be (and probably is) entirely impossible. It was just an idea I had.

Thanks again,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

Well, you can do the XML database and XQuery in a web-based application. But I don't think you would want to be opening applications like Finale from a web page. It might be better to use something like the Myriad Music Plug-in to display and play the MusicXML file in the web browser, and also offer the opportunity to download the MusicXML file to the user's machine. The Myriad Music Plug-in is available for free at:

http://www.myriad-online.com/en/products/mmplugin.htm

I think that you would generally want a desktop application to be doing things like starting particular applications and reading in the MusicXML files. scripting all of that for different applications would get pretty complicated, though. You would probably need a macro program that records mouse clicks and other GUI actions across applications, and use that as a starting point. Good luck with the project!
