Whats the deal with scaning??? sometimes it comes out good and other times i cant even recognize the page i just scaned. i meen i scaned the whole page and it only picked up the first 2 bars. or it just messes everything up to the point of no recognition.... Anyone know what Im doing wrong or how I can solve this issue??? To have a feature like this work only half the time doesnt seem worth it to me.....

Claudia and Midnight (if not the same person),

My guess is that the FinaleScript section of the forum is not the right place to ask questions about SmartScore. You should try the Windows and/or Macintosh sections.

Good luck

You need a better scanning program. If you're on Windows, you'll likely get much better results with SharpEye Music Reader, which you can try for a 30-day free trial:

http://store.recordare.com/sharpeye2.html

On either Windows or Mac, you can also try either the full version of SmartScore or the PhotoScore Professional program from Neuratron. SharpEye and PhotoScore Professional both produce MusicXML files that can be read into Finale using our Dolet plug-in.

There are many variables that affect recognition results of scanned music:
- The print quality of the original material (Should not be hand written or severely degraded)
- The scanner settings selected when acquiring images (Scan 300-400 dpi in B&W or greyscale if possible)
- The quality and behaviour of the the scanner itself (Musitek Tech Support recommends Epson and Canon scanners)
e.g. HP all-in-one scanners create nearly useless "Black and White" images becasuse they are scanned in color (and remain in RGB color mode) and are then reprocessed to appear "Black and White" by a process called "dithering" that degrades solid areas of black into "salt and pepper". Good for photos. Bad for OCR. "Thresholding" retains solid areas of black.
NOTE: SmartScore Lite in Finale 2005 handles greyscale images. Better to choose "Grey" than "Black" if you are using and all-in-one scanner.

The biggest variable is going to be the software you use for recognition. There seems to be some confusion on this forum between SmartScore Lite and SmartScore Pro. SmartScore Lite is merely the recognition engine which passes unedited datat directly to Finale. The Pro version has it's own scanning interface with automatic resolution option, recognizes articulations, dynamics, chord/fret symbols, lyrics and text. It also includes a host of useful automatic and semi-automatic editing and score manipulation features. My tests indicate SmartScore Pro and SharpEye to be essentially equal in accuracy with SmartScore ahead in the total number of symbols recognized (glissandos, arpeggios, chord symbols, pedal markings, etc.). The cost of the Pro Edition is $199 to owners of Finale 2000+,the same price as SharpEye with Finale Plug-in.

Fully functional demos of the SmartScore Pro and Songbook editions demo can downloaded from:
http://www.musitek.com/downloads.html

Test them all and make up your own mind.

On the website it looks like the Pro edition is $299 and not $199 to registered owners of Finale.

What am I missing?

I've found that the upgrade to SmartScore Pro is totally NOT worth it. It does a marginal job at best of recognition and contains lots of extra things that aren't needed if all you are seeking is scanning and OCR. I must strongly suggest SharpEye as an alternative. This program really works well and is available for a fully-functional 30 day trial

The SmartScore Lite to SmartScore Pro upgrade is $199 and is accessible by clicking the "Upgrade" link visible in the SmartScore Lite splashscreen.

Hlo.  Forget about Smartscore.  And forget about the Sibelius equivalent, Photoscore.  Both are garbage.  Get Sharpeye.  It reads scans much better, and saves files in XML format, readable by Finale's built-in Dolet plug-in. cool

I agree with most of what has been said above but i have found that the higher the resolution in scanning, the better the chance of an accurate, reasonable result.
I must say that I do get irrated by the way Finale (and other such programmes) brag about how "powerful" their programme is and its ability to do this and that, and make it out to be soooo quick and easy to achieve everything! It's not like that in reality.

I upgraded from SmartScoreLite to the Songbook and I get consistently good results. It only cost me $99 and I use it all the time.
The SmartScore to Finale import feature works well and I understand they (the Smartscore people) are about to support MusicXML in their new release, so you can have your choice of filters. Sharpeye misses a lot of the complexities Smartscore captures. Sounds like you didnt' test 'em all. I sure did.
