I'm thinking we are going to see a bunch more computers with price tags areound $400. Has anyone tried to run SM on a netbook that has an Atom processor? What is the cheapest way into the relm of SmartMusic system requirements?

Macintosh G5 Quad, OSX v 10.4.11, 14 GB Ram. 2-750 GB Seagates mirrored, ATY Radeaon X1900 runs HP W2207 Monitor, usually in landscape mode.

Roger,

Wow, I'm really sorry to have missed this question back in February! I'm sure we have some teachers and other forum users who have some input, but in the tech support team we have mixed results with netbooks.

Generally, "you get what you pay for." They're really convenient machines, but their name belies their purpose - using the Internet. Generally, SmartMusic's processing requirements supersede the ability of many netbooks (www.smartmusic.com/Support/SystemRequirements.aspx). Our QA testing folks have found some success in situations where the netbooks are stripped of unnecessary software and nothing else is running.

In reported technical problems, we've found not too much hope. The "Atom" processor is pretty prevalent for example, and while a newer CPU from Intel, it's roughly equivalent performance-wise to an Intel Celeron (which is below our Pentium IV / Athlon XP+ minimum).

Sadly, as you've pointed out these are becoming very attractive from a pricing standpoint, so we'll always try to see what we can do to improve SmartMusic's ability to operate in more modest environments. There is a point that we'd lose some important functionality however, so I'm not sure you'll see the system requirements lowered in the foreseeable future.

Hope that's helpful, it's a bit of a mouthful.

Thanks,

James H. Anderson

I'm running Smartmusic on my Netbook (Atom processor). I found out it works superbly in addition with the m-audio transit USB audio interface, even ensemble files. Maybe other external interfaces will do as well.
