May be a stupid question, but how can I use the smartmusic software, if I am not a music student attached to a school..? Am particularly interested in the assessment feature, and will be arranging my own music using Finale.. as well as pulling from the online stuff

Scomo,

Welcome to the forum! When you open music in SmartMusic, assessment is already turned on by default (unless there's no music on-screen, or if you have the "Follow me" feature instead) so that will help you as you use SmartMusic. When you create files in Finale, make sure to choose "Assessment" when you export (instead of Solo or Ensemble) and you'll have assessment in those files as well!

Thanks,

James Lund

That's right - you don't have to be associated with a teacher or school to use the program. All of the songs are available to you with your subscription, and assessment works just the same. Teacher assignments aren't necessary to give you access to music or assessment or any other functionality (short of the functionality of being guided and graded by a teacher :-) ).

This was my question as well ... or at least part of it. My son will be using this for his school band, but I'd like to use it here at home on my own. Since you can have multiple students signed up as long as it's on the same computer, can I use the subscription as well? Can one user have multiple instruments, and can my instrument(s) be different from his? He's using it for trombone, while I'd mostly be using it for voice. Sorry for all the questions. :-) Thanks!

As a partial answer, I am an adult SmartMusic user without a teacher. I use the SmartMusic pieces for tenor sax, alto sax and clarinet.
