You are really going to start charging per student for Smartmusic in the practice room?  My school has a 75 percent poverty/fee waiver rate and no budget for the arts.  With 180 students at $8 each I will be paying over $1400 for a computer program each year that will be used on maybe 2 computers.  Very few of my students have internet access at home.  I was hoping to get my school district on board to purchase subscriptions for each school so we could do common assessments from school to school.  But I guarantee that won't happen anymore.  Do you remember what happened to Netflix when they thought they could skyrocket their prices?  This might be the end of Smartmusic for this school if this elitist move continues.

Cory,

EDIT: for clarification 2/22/13

Thank you for your feedback. The subscription model and price changes are scheduled to take place July 1, 2013. We recommend you contact your account manager to discuss the specifics within your school or district. The intent of the e-mail explaining the new features and price changes was to assist teachers to plan ahead for next year’s 2013-14 budget as well as provide valuable information on upcoming product enhancements.

We recognize that not all students are able to afford their own subscriptions so we wanted to make sure we still had an option, like the practice room, for those students to get the benefits of using SmartMusic. Many SmartMusic teachers in similar situations have found their booster or fundraising organizations have been helpful to ensure every student has the same opportunity. Communicating with SmartMusic teachers about the upcoming enhancements and changes is extremely important. Please watch for additional information over the coming months. If you have immediate questions, please contact our Customer Support department at (866) 240-4041 or your SmartMusic Account Manager.

Seth,

I hate to say this, but with this new pricing structure, you are going to price all but the richer schools out. I am a middle class school, with around 30% fee waiver. In order to get this for my kids, even if I charge a fee (which is not legal in my district), I would still be spending 80% of my yearly budget for SM. Simply put, I cannot afford it. With the current structure, I can have it at school and encourage my kids to buy it at home (I have over 100 students with at-home subscriptions). The new structure will cause me to abandon SM altogether. I have tried to contact my rep, but due to a new re-alignment, I evidently have a new rep who nobody knows how to contact...not even my new rep.

I have worked through some of the issues with SM over the years, been on and off the SM bandwagon, and had finally, after a great deal of work on my part, gotten fully on line. This new pricing structure is very disappointing for lower income schools.

I have been a strong advocate for the use of SmartMusic for years in my district. Early on, we could only afford to have the subscription on one laptop and to use it in lessons. Recently through fundraising, and the hard work of my boosters, we have been able to purchase computers and subscriptions for our practice rooms. Many people worked very hard over the course of years to make that happen. It will be impossible to convince my district, families and supporters to pay over four times what we currently pay for the same service. I am sure MakeMusic does not intend to force schools to drop their program, but that is what this pricing change will do for us and countless others.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Students can purchase a home subscription for about $40 and use it on any computer that has smartmusic on it. If the student has no program, in order to use a practice room copy they must pay $8 per student to use the program. So are they going to give a free practice room copy so we can use it in practice rooms?

Jim,

That is essentially correct. Your purchase of school licenses ($8 per student) allows those students to use SmartMusic on a limited number of school practice room devices (computer, laptop, or iPad). Those students with a home subscription ($40) will be able to use any computer or iPad - including the practice rooms - to access SmartMusic.

Thanks for the response. So what is the price going to be on a practice room copy of smartmusic? and how exactly do you plan on regulating this?

My thought is a lower price on the practice room license per student to say $5 a student. $8 will be sticker shock but $5 sounds reasonable. 50 cents a month per school year (10 months) sounds doable to a parent (and I are one). That's my two cents.

The email I received today has made me very upset!
I have been using Smart Music in my classroom for three or four years now and love it. I am very excited to use it with OTES coming in 2013-2014. I am very disappointed with the latest decision from Smart Music to switch their subscription policies and pricing. I teach in a rural district in Southeastern Ohio with more than half of my students on free or reduced lunch -- very similar situation as the previous post. I was recently at the OMEA Convention and was excited to attend a smart music workshop. The presenter dropped some hints this was coming. The majority of the directors in the room were very bothered by this possible decision. I have spoken to my fellow directors in neighboring districts, and we are all in the same boat. If Smart Music goes forward with this decision, I am quite certain we will not be on board because it is going to be extremely difficult to budget for this being that my music department has no budget as it is. Smart Music was a tool I could use in my classroom to help my students get excited about practicing. With the rates going up, it will probably be impossible for me to continue using it. Smart Music should really consider other alternatives. My principal would like to know if you are going to make allowances for kids on free or reduced lunch? ACT allows kids on free and reduced lunch to take the test free twice. He is also disappointed cause he really sees how it impacts our students. This decision needs to be reevaluated.

The news about the price increase for SmartMusic was extremely disheartening. We currently have two educator subscriptions and eleven practice room subscriptions. Our bill will increase from $720 per year to $2376, that's an increase of 144% and in my opinion is shameful. I am curious how many practice rooms subscriptions are available.

I previously posted to this thread after the initial pricing announcement. Now that the concerns of this thread have been addressed and remedied I want to express my appreciation. Thank you to those who made the decision to fix the pricing issues. My appreciation also goes out to those who expressed their concerns and to those who brought the concerns to the attention of the decision makers. My students and I thank you all.
