Hi all!

I'm using Fin2004d, and regardless of version, since I'll be upgrading at some point, is there a way to set a preference for layer 2 notes to be "to the left" of layer 1 notes in Music Spacing?

Music spacing is pushing my layer 2 notes to the right of my layer 1 notes in a piece, and I'd like it to be reversed.

Cheers and thanks!

Why not swap layers 1 and 2?

Brian, tried that, check out www.music-composition-studio.com/music-notation-challenges.html.

It totally messed up my stems, ties, etc., while "solving" the left-right issue, this swap layers solution creates a few hours of work staring at a screen...something I'd love to curtail!

Cheers!

You can change the default direction stems in two-layer setups very easily, or you can simply flip them by hand...

How about using layer 3 instead of layer 1. I got this result without any flipping/moving other than moving the layer 2 rests.

Hi,

I tried switching layer 1 into layer 3, which gave me a similar result to Nikie's solution. How did Nickie get the right-hand unisons to be notated on top of each other, and the LH unisons to be "non-colliding," as they should be?

Great job, Nickie, BTW...looks great!

Wow!

Cheers!

Take a look at the file. It's just layers 2+3.

Nickie, your version looks great, here's what mine looks like...not pretty...just yet! Is this a music spacing issue?

about unisons colliding or not, there are options in Document options. You can choose to have same noteheads overlap and different not. Check the music spacing options in Document options.

I didn't choose anything in Document Options. This is straight out of the box. Dainis, it looks to me like you need to update the layout. Try, in Speedy Entry, to click in each measure and then finally outside the measures. Does this change anything?

I tried every option for collisions in Document Options:

Unisons: None, Different Noteheads, All Noteheads. Since Nickie is using Fin06, I'm guessing that there may be some differences. Still, what I think I'll try to do is apply different collision options for the treble and bass clefs, which, I think is what is happening in Nickie's version automatically.

I'll report back...

Best,
Dainis

Well, I tried applying different collision options for each staff, but wow, my document seems to be looking worse and worse!

I tried updating the page layout as well...

Thanks for all of your help!

There is one thing to be aware of. Finale does not undo certain spacing operations when updating. For example, if you had entered a 2nd, and it offset the notes, then you changed one of the notes to a 3rd away, you will need to go into Special tools and manually remove the offset, or physicall drag the note in Speedy entry. Just one of those things.

I guess where I'm going with the current notation challenge is to get down and dirty with music spacing. Any tips? I'll do some searching on the forum and online as well...your suggestions would be most appreciated.

Dainis

Hi,

I've tried the music spacing options available to me, here are GIFS for all three options, I'm still not getting anything as nice as Nickie's version.

...can I learn to make my music spacing work that way?
...is this an "upgrade or weep" type of situation?

Sincerely,
Dainis

Greetings to all the folks here.  Is there a standard that most publishing houses uses in regard to spacing.  Do they use beat spacing as opposed to note spacing????  Thanks guys.  I am trying to make my arrangements look good and I also need to learn the best way to handle it. Be well to all and please have a great day.  Billsmilewinkgrin

Hi Bill, I found a decent music notation bibliography online, here it is:

http://www.lilypond.org/doc/v2.4/Documentation/bibliography/out-www/engraving.html

I'm not really sure what "they" use...my guess is that they just use whatever winds up looking right for whichever measure. Some friends of mine have done work for major publishing houses, and it seemed to me that the pub house only cared about the end product, not about the spacing type used.

I'm sure interested in finding out about customizing the spacing options, though!

I'm kind of "stuck" with the piece I'm using as the notation challenge, and I might just adjust each measure manually and call the song "written." Still, it'd be fun to wade a bit deeper into the innards of Finale!

Cheers!
Dainis
