Earlier today some muppet posted a query about how to obtain a serial number for his/her "downloaded" copy of Finale 2005. Several of us replied, with exactly the same message: effectively, buy a real copy, don't be a software pirate ...

... but now this thread has vanished.

Was this the hand of TPTB, or did the miscreant see the errors of his/her ways, and somehow manage vape the entire thread before himself/herself vanishing back into the ether?

If the latter, all well and good, but ...

... I rather hope it wasn't the former: surely the unanimous denigration of the apparent software piracy by all who responded spoke far more eloquently than the surreptitious removal of the thread from public view by the moderators. Shouldn't we be free to berate idiotic software thieves who, having downloaded an illegal copy, actually chose to seek help on the author company's web forum?

I fully expect that a moderator deleted the entire thread, as no forum software that I've ever seen allows the original poster to nuke the whole thing, but only that individual's own post.

Makemusic runs these forums, so they can run them as they see fit, no matter what we mere mortals think.

Perhaps this thread will magically disappear, too! :-)

Brian,

One could get the impression that you enjoy critising Makemusic for anything and everything that they do.

Also, I was disappointed to see that you missed out the bit about it about it all being the fault of GPO and Human Playback, and that it would have been done better with a hardware synth too.

Richard,

Are you talking to me?

FWIW, I was merely surprised to see a thread to which I'd contributed, vanish before my eyes. It never occurred to me that HP could be the problem, but if MM is allowing this code to run the forum, that would certainly explain it. Thanks for correcting me on this one! lol

Maybe we need to reinstall!:p

But beyond that, I agree that it's a bit heavy-handed of MM (if it was, in fact, their deletion.) Especially since everyone was supporting an anti-piracy stance. Maybe they were afraid that one of the "oh, you're jumping to conclusions about it being piracy" folk would send them a legit number.

I recall that back in 2003 there were a lot of questions from folks who obviously had a pirated copy of Finale 2002. It was immediately apparent that they were pirates. The questions usually went: "How do you...." and when the answer was RTFM, they'd say that they had lost it. The pirated copy was missing a few things, so when we'd suggest a reinstall to get the missing elements they'd claim they lost the CDs.

The point is, those threads were not censored or deleted. The members themselves handled these guys without any need for MM to step in.

It seems to me that this thread is "much ado about nothing."

That is another of my NEVER humble opinions.

I guess as has been pointed out in the past, there always WAS the extreme possibility that someone really HAD lost their CDs, or whatever.
But this particular post really was, and I thought it was quite funny it was so direct about it, "how do I get a serial number for a downloaded copy", so there was no room for any leniancy.

BTW, Richard, thank-you for my first belly laugh on this forum. Good one.

For what it's worth, we can't assume the poster meant Finale 2005. He may have downloaded Finale Notepad 2005, for which there is a registration number e-mailed after download. Sometimes we just need more information.

Whatever the truth in this case, TPTB have removed the thread, and QC has had his "first belly laugh on this forum" ...

... gosh, just one guffaw in 3.5 years - I'm so glad we were able to supply some entertainment at long last! lol
