so i was told to post this problem here:

so...

The garritan instruments play at a very low volume inside of Finale. However, when I i select "vst instruments" from the instrument setup link, and then i click a note on the keyboard, the note plays much louder. Also, when I adjust what I think is the volume bar (it has "CC7" to the right of the bar) to make it louder, it still plays quiet as ever in finale, ans when I check the settings again, I find that the "volume" (CC7) controlers have all been reset. Is there a way to make the garritan instruments play louder and KEEP it that way?

btw, i am using finale 09.

I have no personal knowledge of this problem since I use PrintMusic, but this question comes up very frequently. Look down the page for threads such as "Playback volume in Finale2009 + VST" and many others in the recent past. You can also look at the Finale Knowledgebase, there are some articles, although AFAIK they don't mention the reverb setting problem.

Fritz

PS Would one of the gurus like to compile a definitive answer to this problem that Mike Rosen could put on his site, since Finale don't seem to be taking note of how frequently it comes up and udating the knowledgebase ?

The reason I have not written such an article is that I am expecting the Kontakt Player to be replaced with an improved Aria player, possible with Finale 2010, which should be out in a few months.

Anyhow, tinkering with the volume and pan settings in the Kontakt Player will do you no good. Those dials are there for the full standalone version of Kontakt; volume is controlled by Human Playback. However, you can adjust the base volume level of the Garritan instruments by clicking on the icon that looks like a set of gears (only an engineer would come up with an icon like that!) in the Kontakt Player, the clicking on the tab called "Controller." You can set the "Midi Controller #7 volume range" to a higher value. You will want to set different instruments to different values. For example, percussion seems to require a much higher boost than most other instruments.

In Finale, you can raise the base volume of the entire score in the "Mixer" view--though if you set it too high you risk distortion.

I don't understand what "gear" icon ur talking about. Could you go into a little more detail please? Are you talking about the "CC7" slider-thing?

See the attached graphic. By the way, please don't call me an "ur." I don't know what that is, but I'm sure I would not like it.
