Hi,

I'm working on a transcription of Brubeck's "Blue Rondo A La Turk" and I've run into a problem with the beaming for the 8th notes in the 9/8 meter sections. In the song, it switches back and forth between a (2-2-2-3) feel and a (3-3-3) feel. I can get the software (Finale 2009c) to beam the (3-3-3) sections properly (3 groups of 3 8th noes) via simply using the compound meter with 3 groups of 3 dotted quarter notes. I can get the first portion of the (2-2-2-3) section to beam properly as well by building a custom meter with (1/4-1/4-1/4-3/8). This forces Finale to beam sets of 2 8th notes, but neither 1.5/4 nor 3/8 results in 3 beamed 8th notes for the last portion of the measure.

I'm fairly certain that I could break the measure into two measures with a "hidden" barline and set the "2nd measure to be 3/8 with a hidden time signature as a work around, but that seems crazy complicated and undesirable. If anyone has an alternative solution, I'm quite keen to hear it.

P.S. Sorry about the fractions for time signatures, but there's no other way to write them in the forum.

Thanks,
Dave

In the first upper box put 2+2+2+3. In the first lower box put 8. Then choose different time signature for display as 9/8.

couldn't he just use the / key. I know, it takes longer, but it guarantees correctness.

The composite meter, used correctly, can save many keystroks, such as /, when doing a large project. For the occasional beam change, the / works well.

To get it to beam automatically you have to enter the Time Signature in EDUs - If you enter a composite meter as above the eighths remain unbeamed by default.

Use the composite meter and enter:

1 1 1 1
1024 + 1024 + 1024 + 1536

The time signature is automatically calculated to 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 3/8. You can then "Use a different Time Signature For Display" and set it for 9/8 or however else you want it to display.

Didn't know that!

It would be useful if the copy function could be set to copy rebeaming that's been done with /, so that you could copy such rebeaming onto different notes in other measures. In my version, at least, that doesn't seem to be an option.

I don't believe you need to do it with edu's as my way doesn't. What is wrong with 2+2+2+3/8?

Oh--I misunderstood you! 2+2+2+3/8 is not the same as 2/8+2/8+2/8+3/8.

Actually, I've just attached a file that does. Put 2+2+2+3 all in the first window, and 8 below.

Ah - I never knew you could enter more than one number in the box. For 8 years I've been using EDU's. Ugh.

I did, but never had the occasion to test what the difference is. Gosh this forum is truly invaluable.

Thanks to everyone who worked thru actually defining the question and then getting to the answer.
