I'm working on a transcription of Brubeck's "Blue Rondo A La Turk" and I've run into a problem with the beaming for the 8th notes in the 9/8 meter sections. In the song, it switches back and forth between a (2-2-2-3) feel and a (3-3-3) feel. I can get the software (Finale 2009c) to beam the (3-3-3) sections properly (3 groups of 3 8th noes) via simply using the compound meter with 3 groups of 3 dotted quarter notes. I can get the first portion of the (2-2-2-3) section to beam properly as well by building a custom meter with (1/4-1/4-1/4-3/8). This forces Finale to beam sets of 2 8th notes, but neither 1.5/4 nor 3/8 results in 3 beamed 8th notes for the last portion of the measure.
I'm fairly certain that I could break the measure into two measures with a "hidden" barline and set the "2nd measure to be 3/8 with a hidden time signature as a work around, but that seems crazy complicated and undesirable. If anyone has an alternative solution, I'm quite keen to hear it.
P.S. Sorry about the fractions for time signatures, but there's no other way to write them in the forum.
Thanks, Dave | Back to Top | |
