Can I enter a piano keyboard score and have it scored for band instruments?

No. You can explode the piano score onto separate staves, but you would still have to assign instruments, decide which instruments should play which lines, decide if the instrument can play all the notes in the line...

It's called arranging, and people spend years learning how to do it.

Simple Entry, QWERTY keyboard. That's my system, and I'm stickin' to it.

I'm afraid Mike is right. First you need some "professional advice". Take a look at this:
www.amazon.com/Concert-Band-Arranging-Six-Lessons/dp/1425987478/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b

If you want to "jump in" with little or no arranging experience, I'd suggest you consider a relatively simple arrangement for a minimum number of instruments. Take the piano score (in Finale) and add the following staves above it to create a "short score":

> Flute/Oboe
> Clarinet 1, 2, (3)
> Alto Sax
> Trumpet 1, 2
> F Horn (doubles Alto Sax much of the time in easier arrangements)
> Low Brass and Woodwinds (in octaves - lower octave for tuba, bass clarinet and bari sax, upper octave for bassoon, tenor sax, trombone, baritone)
> Percussion 1 (Snare Drum/Bass Drum or Drum Set)
> Percussion 2 (Cymbal, Triangle, etc.)
> Mallet Percussion

Use the piano part to "copy and paste" lines to the short score, although it might be easier to just enter the band parts from scratch using the piano as a guide. Here is where the arranger's art comes into play - who plays what when, simplifying rhythms to make them more "band-like", etc.

Just my 2 cents…
N.

So, you mean I can't just scan a piece of piano music in, and then press a button to have Finale turn it into a band arrangement?
How come?
That sounds like a really basic function.
For the price, I think finale should do that.
It should also write that piano piece I wanted to scan in.

... and also building on N. Grossingink's comment about starting simple:

I started arranging piano scores for sax quartet in 2003 as a hobby. Nice and easy, all 4 instruments have the same general sound, same range (when shown in treble clef), same fingerings, etc.

In 2010, after 7+ years, I'm finally thinking I'll try something for full concert band. Maybe I'm a slow learner, or maybe there's tons to learn even when working with such a small homogeneous ensemble.

Do I wish there was a button in Finale to do it for me? No way! Where's the fun in that?

(And to all the rest of you, I'm ROFL too!)
