I've been using Finale 2010 for some time. Recently, I installed Cubase 5. Shortly afterwards, I found that playback on Finale was affected. The Garritan-for-Finale sounds tended to be watery, like they're gurgling....I mean, really like bubbles under water. Rebooting had no affect. Fortunately, I had a system restore point in Windows XP just before installing Cubase. So I did a system restore, and the problem went away. Of course, a System Restore effectively eviscerates the Cubase installation, but it also proves that installing Cubase did something that Finale doesn't like.

Has anyhow, had success running Finale and Cubase on the same machine? I'm thinking I would need some sort of virtual machine software (e.g., VMWare) to isolate the two programs, although maybe that would require an additional Windows license....

In any case, without knowing exactly what it was that Cubase does (some dll, or registry setting, or change to a sound driver? Who knows...), it's hard to know how the two can coexist. It would be nice if one could pinpoint it somehow and have a sort of "settings switcher" that would optimize the system for whichever program one wants to run at a given time. Or perhaps if similar software is offered in a cloud-based format, one could use it that way.

Anyhow, I'd be interested in if anyone has a solution for this.

Finale 2010, includes Garritan for Finale, and smart-whatever softsynth.
