My friends, when using a series of chromatic triads (or larger), is it possible to avoid having to enter the triad each time, or is there a way to enter the triad once and then tell Finale to enter it again and again (thus, making a downward or upward chromatic chord just a matter of initiating a single keystroke for the half step). It seems logical that Finale would allow such but I have exhausted my searching in the manual to find a command. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Copy, paste, and then transpose up a minor second (or augmented unison)? Not quite a single keystroke, but faster than re-entering every note.

Thanks for the reply, Terence. I cannot get Finale to copy just a portion of the measure. Perhaps there is the problem. Hmmm..... If I select the triad with one click, it will not copy. A double click puts me in Simple Entry mode and will not copy. I am using Finale 2011. It it is not too much trouble, could you tell me how you are copying a triad only? I really appreciate the advice.

Ha! I think I have an idea how it will work. I disengage the "complete measure with rests" function so it should show only the triad in the measure and then allow me to copy the triad only and use it multiple times. I will try this.

Nope, does not work. Still it selects only the measure. Arrrrrgh!!! I give up. I will just enter the triads manually.

You have to click outside the measure and hold down the button, then drag select just nthe chord.

Are you saying you can't select a partial measure? Click outside the staff and *drag* around the area you want. You should be able to select the smallest of durations.

I think based on what you describe that you'd want to paste multiple times. Once you have a measure-full, select the entire measure and paste multiple times. *THEN* go back with simple entry and select one stem at a time and use the arrow keys up and down.

Hope I understood you.

Ha! Finally I figured it out. "Drag and Drop" within the measure works perfectly. The information can be found in the "Note Mover Tool". Perfect. I knew there had to be a way but could not find the necessary information. Life is good.

Thanks for the information, my friends, I did not receive your messages telling me how to do this before my last post. I really, really appreciate your help and the time you spent replying to my inquiry.

My friends, NOW I see what my main problem was in trying to copy just one beat (triad) within a measure. Previously, I could seem to only copy a measure or more. By using the "shift + left/right arrow" I can contract the selection to a single triad. Also, the "drag and drop" function is very good. Finale is a powerful program and takes much time to master, I think. It's all in the manual but finding a right search string is often challenging.

You don't need to use the keyboard at all. You may want to review proper use of the Selection Tool, as that would have made this very simple to accomplish.

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read
