Is there a way to rotate text in Finale? I'm trying to turn an "L" upside down to replicate the symbol used by Arnold Schoenberg to complete a theme.

Andymillerpos14,

What version year of Finale are you using? - 2012? - 2011? - 2010? - 2009?

Two ways to rotate font characters, lines of text, or whole text blocks:

1. (Shape Designer solution):
- In the Shape Designer, draw a line.
- Give the line zero width.
- On the end of the line, create a custom arrowhead. This can be a single font character, a whole load of text or even a mixture of text and shapes.
- Rotate the invisible line to put the text at whatever angle you wish.

2. (Custom Line Tool solution):
- Create a custom line, by using the Custom Line Tool (in the Smart Shape palette). To do so, hold down the correct modifier key (Windows: Ctrl ; Mac: Option), and click the Custom Line Tool.
- In the dialog box Smart Line Style, set the Line Thickness to zero. Add the text by using the lower pane. Depending of what you want, you could place the text in one end of the line or center the text between the ends.
- When you rotate the line, the text will rotate along with it.

Great tips, Peter!  Thanks, a little awkward/cumbersome to get used to how it works, but either method does work.

Hi,
there is a problem when I use custom lines with thickness = zero.
When I export to pdf with Finale's export funktion, the line is still visible. (It is not visible. when I print with Adobe Distiller).
A solution could be to use: Line Style > character > custom > any empty symbol like #100.

Andy, why didn't you go the route of obtaining a font with the hauptstimme, etc., characters? Seems much easier than what you're doing.

You can get all of the sibelius fonts by downloading the demo. You don't need to keep the program. Even after you remove it, the fonts will remain.

As a followup, does anybody know how to rotate a text block that makes up a Group Name.  I have on occasion wanted to rotate the name of a group 90 degrees, but have not been able to figure it out.  Peter's methods looked promising, but still there is no joy in Muddville!

those are the only two was of doing it.
if you want to rotate group names, you will end up having to add a smart line at the beginning of every single system in your piece.
and needless to say, any change in measure layout will undo your work by shifting that smart line out of position.

there is a font that contains a bunch of pre-determined phrases for use in that context.
but the font does not allow you to create new text. you make do with what they supply, which is complete phrases.

Could you elaborate a little on what you mean?  Attach a small sample, if you have the time.

For an existing group name, I still can't find a way to modify it so it can be rotated per Peter's methods.  Maybe you are saying to forget about the actual group name feature and just use a smart line instead.

Precisely.

Which is why it's a bit tedious to use rotated text for group names.

Yes, that would be acceptable, but the kerning on the "I" needs adjusting, and I see no way to do it either.

I've tried this approach before but because of the relative sizes of certain letter, it can end up looking very strange.

I think there are other possibilities.

1) you can use expression tool/custom shapes (text as custom arrowhead).
2) import as a graphic (vector) and attach to measure or page.
3) create quickly a font. It's not complicated as it sound. I use this method.
  a) input text into illustrator (that is going to be group name), rotate it
  b) copy paste into font software (I use font creator pro)
  c) use it.
Screenshot attached.

Another, somewhat cumbersome approach to getting Group Names to appear rotated 90 degrees is to export your file as a pdf and then import it into Adobe Illustrator (or equivalent) to have rotated text. I've done that before, although I'm not sure I recommend it.

Perhaps MM should add better text support to their next iteration of the Finale product line. They've made lots of progress, but there's always more, eh? ;)

Another approach is to use a vertical font - see the screenshot. I would suppose this sort of font would work as well in Windows as on a Mac. Using it takes a little getting used to - eg the line spacing is what one uses to space the letters as one wishes for a vertical group name. Changing this spacing can be quite useful if the number of staves in the group varies from system to system.

EDIT And here is an illustration (second screenshot) of a vertical font in use. Note the different spacing for 'Turba' and 'On Stage'. This is line spacing. The font here shown was supplied by OCTO on this forum.

Very interesting David and PIOTR.  Seems to be just what I am looking for, David.  Can you supply a link to the font you say OCTO provided?  That would be great.

[Edit] I found the R & L Andale fonts from OCTO, also the one from Wess-Music.  Thanks.  For anyone else interested: http://forum.makemusic.com/default.aspx?f=6&p=1&m=278511

I did not know this topic of rotating group names or staff names had been discussed at length before.

Are you entering the text using the Text Tool, or are you editing the text from the Group Name or Staff Name edit feature of the Staff Tool/Score Manager?  I see the text attributes of alignment and justification are available for "Text Tool" text, but they are not available from the edit group name or edit staff name approach.
