I click the download link from the Finale site and when it's all finished downloading, I get an box that pops up, asking me to purchase WinZip. I say "No" to that, not even understanding why I'm seeing it. That's it? Game over? I have to buy WinZip? No on-screen message. No nothing. Everything just vanishes. How am I supposed to even be sure that this is, in fact, the problem?

I'm unable to loacte my download anywhere and I've tried downloading twice. It's beyond frustrating. I don't know if I have money in my account to purchase Winzip, even if that is the problem. Even if I do, how to I retrieve my download once I've purchased Winzip? Why does something this simple have to be an issue? I just paid $139 for something. Where is it?!

My options were to "purchase Winzip" or "purchase Winzip." Since when do these bastards have a monopoly on the entire market? I'm going to search the web for other option do unzip my file and will NEVER purchase Winzip again because of this.

It's pretty obvious that there is something screwy with your Internet connection. Otherwise, we wouldn't see these multiple posts. I suggest you call MM in the morning. Or, just try again. You certainly shouldn't have to purchase WinZip or any other utility.

Thanks Mike. Sorry for the multiple posts. There's something screwy with my internet connection, as you say. I would like to try again but just like salt in a wound, when I go back to Finale to redownload, it tells me no up-grades are available for me.

You have gone to the website, and entered your registered serial number? If you find nothing, then a call to customer service is definitely in order. These things happen, and almost always at night, or on the weekend.

WinZip is not free, though it can be used indefinitely in "trial" mode. It is worth having, and the people who spent time developing it deserve to get paid. Figure out a way to be an honest customer and pay for the privilege of using this essential utility.

Presently I am running multiboot -- Win 3.11, FreeDOS, NT 2000, 2 installations of XP Pro (for different purposes and configurations), and Linux -- fixin' to move to a VM Desktop with Win 8 (when it is released) for better total integration, running different OSs at the same time rather than having to reboot to make the switch. I will continue to use XP for my main OS for most applications. Why??

Windows from XP on should have unzipping built in. Double-click on the icon with Windows Explorer.

True ----- but no thanks. That is, there is a rather primitive zipping capability for NTFS files in XP, but there are some things it won't do very well. The XP help file states: "Installing a different compression program to Windows will remove Compressed (zipped) Folders from the right-click menu choices and replace it with the new compression program's icon." Namely, the Microsoft one, which doesn't work very well, is overwritten by a third party program (Win Zip) which does everything very well. It reads every compression utility ever published and restores them to their original condition no matter how they were compressed. Back in the MSDOS days I used ARJ because it gave tighter compression and offered more options via a long list of optional switches. WinZip reads the old ARJ files as if they were compressed by WinZip itself.

I've been unzipping files with XP and Win 7 with no problem. Maybe I'm just lucky.

Yeah, I've never had a problem with it.

There's also 7-zip, which has higher compression ratios that Winzip, reads a zillion formats (including ARJ), and is free.

I am certain that I have never paid for a zip-unzip program. That function has always come built in with whatever operating system I've used--or maybe one of my applications provided it as a freebie. Doesn't matter which because the important thing is that it is a function I have always had access to and never paid for. If my system were insisting that I pay for something that basic, I'd take a look at the file associations on my system and find an alternative to the complaining program. If I had to, I'd look for a freebie on the web, because for most everyday operations there are usually hundreds of shareware or freeware alternatives.

The question is, why is the Finale installation asking Brian Hayes to purchase WinZip?

Of course they deserve to get paid. But if something is being offered for free on the net, that does not mean that someone did not get paid for producing it. As for the worth? I use a free PDF creator and and free mp3 converter. Both do exactly what I need them to do. So, why should I pay $80-$100 for something that has all sorts of bells and whistles that I don't want or need?

There is very high-quality open-source software, so "worth what you pay for it" is rather uninformed. Linux, Firefox, Audacity...I could name dozens. Rather than programmers getting ripped off, they choose to donate their time to the commons. In fact, one could almost say that price is NO indication of quality in the software world.

If you like Winzip and think it's worth the price, then it is. But that doesn't mean that free programs are bad.

The question is, why is the Finale installation asking Brian Hayes to purchase WinZip?

Because the latest download of Finale 2012, which I assume is what the OP is downloading, is in ZIP format.  It is a full download and not a "download/install manager" like it was originally distributed.  This means you only have to download it once, a long process for most users.  It can then be unzipped to your hard drive.  The installation package could be burned to CD/DVD if desired.  The full install includes all the external files needed, including ARIA player, GIFF, and all the samples.  If you ever have to re-install for whatever reason, you don't have to waste time re-downloading.

Ron, in his last disaster with his system, says he was not able to find this download ZIP file on his account.  This is strange and he should investigate this with MM.

Right, but there are many ways to unzip it, as we've been discussing--in fact, it's built into Windows. Why is it hawking a commercial product?

They should really be supplying a self-extracting executable, which is the proper way.

I think that any promotion to purchase the WinZip product presents itself only if one tries to open the ZIP with an out of date or unregistered WinZip program.  As you pointed out, if you don't have WinZip installed, Windows, since XP, has had its own built in ZIP archive capability, and WinZip should not even enter into the picture.  When WinZip is installed, it will become the default program to open ZIP files, unless this association is overridden, an option that is more often than not, ignored or misunderstood by the user.

WinZip is not freeware, but as has been pointed out, can be used for a certain amount of time for free after which time you will be asked to purchase the product before you can continue to use it.  I may be wrong, but I don't think you can use it indefinately for free anymore.  I purchased it years ago, so I don't really see these issues anymore.

I suspect the OP is running into this.  Downloading the Finale ZIP more than once should not be necessary.  If the OP does not know where the download is located, he must have used the default download directory for his browser, and not specified where to store it.  In that case, then downloading a 2nd time should have brought up the warning that the file already exists.

Something is not adding up here!  "...and will NEVER purchase Winzip again..."?!?!

BTW: Foul language rantings will get you banned from using this forum.
