Just installed Finale 2012c on Windows 8.1. Whenever I try to assign instrument sounds in the Aria player with the Garritan instruments for Finale library, I get an endless spinning cursor and I have to force quit. The machine has the latest i7 processor with 32 Gb RAM. Any ideas? I already uninstalled and reinstalled Finale and Garritan.

Thanks,

Brian

Another interesting crash is that if I try to launch the Aria player standalone, I get this message:

"Check Preferences. Maybe the current driver doesn't support this sample rate."

I then click through the dialog and go to Tools / Preferences in the Aria player. This results in an immediate crash.

Are you sure your sound card have a Window 8.1 driver?

Bill,

This is a top of the line off the shelf Dell XPS 8700. The following audio devices are present:

Device Description Type
nVIDIA HDMI/DP @ nVIDIA GK104 - High Definition Audio Controller PCI
Realtek ALC899 @ Intel Lynx Point PCH - High Definition Audio Controller [C-2] PCI

I would expect that the built-in audio would work. I also have a MOTO Traveler, but have to get a FireWire card for it.

Brian,

What version of the ARIA player/engine are you using? You might want to try just updating that to version 1.620 (the latest): https://store.makemusic.com/Downloads/Default.aspx?id=604

Already did that. Same crash.

Incidentally, I also installed Sibelius and it complains that no Audio hardware is found. Strange since it's a high end Dell machine with build in audio.

Sounds like a conflict with the built in audio. Sibelius's engine is also built by Plogue (same as ARIA), so it would make sense that they're both having problems. At this point, we'd need to see some system information and possibly ARIA logs to figure out what's wrong. That's a bit more than I can do here. Can you submit this as a case to my team?

Sounds like a driver issue... It seems lots of people are having odd issues with audio in W8.1... You may find some pointers if you Google it...

My knowledge of Garritan is limited to put it mildly, but are you sure you're using the 32-bit version of the plugin? Guess Finale should only see 32-bit versions, but I know of cases where 2012 got confused by multiple instances and ... Make double sure Finale isn't seeing any 64-bit versions of the VSTs. Is Sibelius compatible with W8.1...? W8 is a different story, apparently

I'll submit a case with the Aria logs, etc. later today or tomorrow. I'm waiting for the Firewire card for the MOTU Traveler so should be able to resolve a lot once it arrives.

Thanks,

Brian

This is very strange, but it looks like I have this solved.

I did get a FireWire card for my MOTU Traveler and that worked. But I think the reason the built-in audio wasn't working before was because I didn't have anything plugged into the audio output. I guess it's part of the Dell sound management in Win 8. Even in the Dell sound manager, the standard Windows audio device doesn't appear until I plug something in to the built-in audio output jack. I've never known that it mattered whether something was plugged in or not.

I think it happens in Windows (non-Dell PC) also.

If you go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Manage Audio Devices you can right-click in the Playback and Recording screens and tick boxes to show Disabled Devices and Disconnected Devices. Windows 7 is the same as Windows 8 in this regard. If the boxes aren't ticked, the devices do not appear if they are in the Disabled or Disconnected condition.
