As for key signatures, I agree in principle that the further you stray from the beaten path, you risk confusion. But I'd like to be able to achieve concert F-flat major without workarounds (includes Bbb in the key signature), and non-standard key signatures like Bartok used almost 100 years ago (Bb and F# in the same signature). | Back to Top

I guess it's just that the method of inputting those key signatures doesn't seem very intuitive to me.
And for the F-flat major key (and others) -- I *thought* I remembered being able to do that somewhere in life! Thought I was going crazy... | Back to Top

Both are possible without workarounds: From the dialog box Key Signature, use the pop up menu at the top, and choose "Nonstandard…". You get to the dialog box Nonstandard Key Signature. Click the button "Next" twice to get to Linear Key Format 2 (the Linear Key Formats 0 and 1 are "hardwired" and can not be customized to give what you want).
1) To get concert F♭ major, scroll the accidentals down to 8 flats (you will see B𝄫 in the key signature). There is not much "nonstandard" in this, really.
2) To get the special Bartok key signature with B♭ and F♯, scroll down to 2 flats. Click the button "Acc. Order". You get to the dialog box Accidental Order and Amount. Click the button "Prev" twice to get to Unit -2 (= the second flat). It should say Step Level: 2 (= E; since C = 0) Amount: -1 (= flat) Change to Step Level: 3 (= F) Amount: 1 (= sharp)
By The Way: In a score with transposing instruments in flat transpositions like B♭ and E♭ I would not mind using concert F-flat major. But a Bartok key signature with B♭ and F♯ is a different story. I would only use a such key signature in a piano score. In an orchestration of a such piece I would notate with the traditional key signatures that do not mix flats and sharps, and use note accidentals instead. Better safe than sorry.

I guess my complaint is that I'd like it to be more immediately obvious what to do, rather than memorizing the different values for the AOrdAmt option...and who came up with that catchy name, anyway?) | Back to Top
