I think that phpBB3 is a good choice: it's opensource, the development team has been around for long enough to prove that they are not dependent on one prima donna, and it's in active development i.e. security problems are fixed when found and the anti-spam war is being actively fought. I didn't much like the theme chosen for the Garritan site (purely my subjective feeling about it), but just about everything in phpBB3 is customisable - the look, the layout, everything, so that could change.

I'm giving some links to various large BBs that use it, but look very different to each other - would be interested to hear other people's opinions about which they prefer.

What I like, is that -

1) A forum looks “pleasant”, “inviting”, “friendly”, “not boring”.
This is mostly a matter of colour choices and layout (= dimensions), but perhaps also a matter of font choices.

2) A forum looks “unique” - not like hundreds of other forums.
This. too, is a matter of colours, layout and fonts.

It is definitely a matter of taste, but “Joomla Forum” and “Arts of Problem Solving” look best to me.
The other forums give me the feeling of “boring”, “looking like hundreds of other forums”.

Peter

The new forum was coming out "soon" last March. Is "soon" any closer to being realized?

My take on forum look and feel: The design needs to aid the reader in reading, searching, and posting. Beyond that it should not draw attention to itself. It's functional features should be as intuitive as possible and unobtrusive when not needed. Boring is good! The more it is like other effective fora, the better. Of those examples listed by Fritz I'm most familiar with Mozilazine and find it easy and comfortable to use.

I think http://forums.makemusic.com/ should have a "Test drive" section so we could try it and not clutter up the Garritan and MusicXML fora. Looking at it is fine, but that doesn't really tell us what it's like.

I know my comments are a few months too late, but I'm not on this formus often.

I hope the new forum software enforces giving a thread a subject! I find it annoying when people create threads here without one (no blame intended).

Simple things, like GETTING THE TIME ZONE RIGHT (it is NOT April 01, 2015 4:50 AM (GMT -5) right now, but an hour out, as always) would cheer me up no end! ;-)
