Sure Brian, you and John are right in case that the work would be performed publicly without paying for the rights. I agree with that 100%! Otherwise, the general score can be found and bought in any music store. And anyone could copy it into Finale if they want to study this genre of music or this kind of orchestration or develop something else starting from it. No way to perform anything without paying for the rights! I just thought that maybe someone already had it written in Finale. That's all.
Even if someone had done so, to distribute it to others would break copyright law. It really doesn't matter if you are using the score for study or for performance. Since it is under copyright, you have to buy the score from a recognized official distributor.
If you buy it, then make a .MUS file out of it for yourself that's one thing. But if you buy it, make the .MUS file, then distribute that Finale file to others, you are breaking the law. Finale (started with ver. 3.0) 2010, 2011, 2012b installed Win XP basically ALL Garritan sounds, plus XSample Chamber Ensemble.

How often do I have to fight to get a choir to buy parts (which usually aren't even that expensive) instead of just copying everything, or that I get handed something someone plucked from somewhere dodgy and it's either illegally copied or really badly engraved and I have to sit there gritting my teeth, trying to read past all the mistakes and unnecessarily clumsy notation. This problem in all its ramifications remains relevant and ubiquitous, and if it doesn't concern or interest you, just ignore it. What does anyone gain (including you) from a totally useless, non-constructive, socially inept remark? Vaughan

This will not go unnoticed. Have a nice day. Shame on you. Karma. No one should get a free pass to misbehave. | Back to Top | |

Since we've gone from the basement full of monks to the desktop copier, changes have not kept pace. Surely, better minds than mine could come up with a method of generating clean, unmarked scores to purchasers while still protecting the investment. Mike Rosen www.specialmillwork.com

Out of curiosity, I just Googled "Cabaret Score" and got dozens of hits of places you can download it from. What difference does it make what format it is in as long as you can read it? I'd rather have a good printed (or pdf) copy than a Finale copy any day of the week. Now with so many musicals being typeset afresh in Finale, I would go the other way and say I would LOVE to be sent the Finale version rather than a dirty, pencilmark-filled paper score or even a PDF (the latter are sometimes offered to professional companies). I have just had to transpose one number in a forthcoming production, from F back to its original key of Eb, and to say it was a boring job copying the full score, page by page, staff by staff, just so I could eventually change the key and extract new parts, would be understatement of the year. It would have saved me over a day just to load up the existing Finale source and transpose it. Brian
The only pre-existing works I would use are old folk songs--and in those cases I'd rather have a clean copy and importing it into Finale is irrelevant because of the way I'd use it. Otherwise, I download scores to study them, not to copy or amend them. I do hear what you are saying though and understand that a Finale copy would save an arranger a lot of work.
