since the two instruments don't quite have the same range, it would entirely depend on what the music is.

First, what software are you using (full Finale 2014b? PrintMusic 2010? Notepad?)

Second, are you asking whether you can drag/copy the bassoon part onto a bass clarinet staff, or are you asking whether the ranges of the two instruments are compatible.

Please give us a little more info so we can help you better.

Many thanks for your prompt replies.

I am using Print Music 2011 software. My composition is a march for military band. I am not entirely conversant with bass clarinet writing and was going to duplicate all bassoon parts to bass clarinet part, which I believe would be essentially asking whether I can drag/copy the bassoon part onto a bass clarinet staff.

Many thanks.

If the transposition for the Bass Clarinet staff is set up properly (I am assuming it is), then it will automatically transpose it to the correct notes so the sound (pitch) will be the same. Check to make sure the range is compatible.

Some bass clarinets go all the way down to the bassoon's low Bb, but not all do. You can safely assume all bass clarinets will go down to a Db (written Eb). The extreme high end is about the same.

Bass clarinets have their break between written middle line Bb and B. They don't like notes above that as they tend to be rather thin.

I'd say the bottom register (written bottom Eb to the aforementioned Bb) is the place to stay with bass clarinet music.
This is where the instrument is at its best. Some bass clarinets can go down to low C, not all will, and if you write notes from C-D and your bass clarinetist can only get to Eb, well you get the idea.

William:
Yes. I do it regularly in my small town symphony. All of the above comments are true. We have one good bassoon player in our symphony. I generally transpose the 2nd bassoon part to play on my bass clarinet. In my opinion, I am not sure the bass clarinet is as "dextrous" as the bassoon on fast tongued passages. I have been known to skip ever other note. Don't tell any one. I generallyl scan the 2nd basoon part with Sharpeye and then clean it up in Finale.
Dragging the bassoon part on the conductor's score is ok, but be sure that articulations etc and cues from the original bassoon parts appear on the extracted parts from the conductor's score.
