I'm trying to print a file I created some years ago in Windows XP and Finale 2007. All functions seem to work except printing. I can't print to any printer, and the problem occurs both on my desktop and laptop. When I try to print, I get the attached window. Then Finale crashes and needs to close. The data check in file maintenance checks out OK. Any ideas on what might be causing this problem? Any ideas on how to fix a corrupt file? Other files work fine.

I can't post the file.

When I get that, I export to XML and then re-import. It doesn't always work, but give it a go.

XML is a drastic and lossy solution.

Maybe try to print individual pages or ranges of pages at a time, and see if you can isolate what's causing it.

On a hunch, I shortened the file name and now it prints just fine. Has anyone else experienced this problem--and solution?

Thanks, all, for the suggestions.

Wasn't there a 65-character limit at one point in XP?

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read

Limit on what?

Looks like when you print something there is a concept of "document name" in the print queue, so perhaps either the name is too big for Windows, as Flint says, or Finale is failing to use a big enough buffer when constructing the print command.

I shortened the file name because I very, very vaguely recalled hearing something about troubles with over-long (overlong for Windows XP and possible 98) file names. Apparently, that was the problem.

It makes me wonder why Windows 7 would still carry this burden with file name difficulties. Or perhaps the problem is Finale, as you suggest.

The limit seems to be 75 characters. Somehow reminiscent of FORTRAN and the punched-card era.

Finale can deal with longer file names as far as opening and saving them. MS Word can print an 80-character file name, so I suspect the bug is Finale's. I think we can live with it, though.

Hah! Yes, we can, especially since the fix worked and I saved myself days of work.

BTW, exporting to XML and importing the file again works, only because, I suspect, xml removes the original file name and calls it the Maestro font default.ftm. I didn't bother testing further and trying to rename it to the original name.

This does not make sense to me for two reasons:

  1. You have to name the file when exporting, at least on my system you do.
  2. When importing MusicXML into Finale, the resulting Finale document has no name and is not stored on disk until you save it and give it a name, the default being UntitledXX.mus(x).  It does not (should not) import as "Maestro Font Default.ftm(x)", or anything else, and only takes the name you give it when saving the untitled document.  As you know, "Maestro Font Default.ftm(x)" is the name of the "default" default file for Finale, which opens when you choose the menu item "File -> New -> Default Document".  The FTM(X) file used as the default file can, of course, be easily changed with "Edit -> Preferences -> New".  If preferred, the original "Maestro Font Default.ftm(x)" can be replaced with your own modified "Maestro Font Default.ftm(x)".

You're right, Charles. I'm naming the file when I export it, but when I import it, Finale names it "Maestro font default.ftm." I have no idea why. Not a big deal to me right now.

Again, AFAIK, this is not done.  Finale may use the default file template as a starting point when importing a MusicXML file (I'm not sure of this, all the intelligence to build a document should be in the MusicXML, Michael Good can clarify), but as I pointed out, the resultant document is untitled until you save it and provide it a path/name of your choosing.  I would not suggest naming it "Maestro Font Default.ftm(x)" as this may overwrite your original depending on the path, unless this is the desire.

Does Finale/Windows include the entire path name in the filename character count?
