I have Finale 2012c. Recently, I am unable to open the following from off-line: Finale tutorials, user manual, shortcuts & character maps, and quickstart videos. Internet explorer appears to first look for the files on the harddrive, then it looks for the files on the web. The files will load if I'm connected to the internet.

I can find the manual and video files manually on my machine, but I can not access them from within the Finale 2012 application. They are still on my machine.

I am still able to open the quick start reference guide , which is a pdf file.

Any thoughts ?

Are your preferences set up correctly to find the files?

Preferences says to look for the User Manual: C:/Program Files (x86)/Finale 2012/Help Files

Preferences is set to look online for the User Manual if an internet connection is available.

Here is the address that appears in the URL box of Internet Explorer when I click on Help>User Manual:
file:///C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Finale%202012/Help%20Files/Finale.htm#CSHID=undefined
This gives me an outline of the asked for page, but no content. I see a tab labeled WebHelp with this
address associated with the label.

I've monkeyed around some with the preferences settings after reading your question. I deleted the spaces in URL and got a message saying to be on-line or reinstall the help files from the Finale CD. I also unchecked the checkbox setting the application to look on-line if an internet connection is available, but no improvement.

I find the Help Manual files on my hard disc at: C:/Program Files (x86)/Finale 2012/Help Files/Content

I'm also wondering if IE is blocking the action of Finale for opening the Help Manual. But, it seems to me that IE would probably tell me it was doing that.

What if Finale is confused as to whether you are connected to the internet? What if you uncheck the "look for if online"?

I recall there were problems with 2012 and the local manual. I see that the main page doesn't seem to load. However, you can still access pages in the manual by clicking on menu items in the left pane.

The page that loads for me has borders for three frames. None of the frames load with visible content. The left pane (frame) does not load with detectable content for me. So, I apparently can not still access pages in the manual as you can.

I will take a look at Internet Explorer and see if there is something there I see. I appreciate both of your thoughts.

Interesting. I never had any problem loading it with Firefox. I have found that there are some URLs that will not load with one browser, but will open with another, so I tend to switch around.

I'm using Chrome and if I uncheck "use online help" I get the same behavior. I can outwit it by using Explorer to navigate to Finale 2012/help files/content/contents.HTM and double clicking on it.

My head is spinning, but I'll try to write a cogent post. The post in this thread regarding the use of Windows Explorer to find the help files got me to thinking. There is more than one way to access the User Manual.

First, I think that if we are happy accessing the User Manual, Videos, etc from the internet rather than from our computers, then the internet is a reasonable way to go. Make sure that the checkbox found at Edit>Preferences>Folders, is checked to allow internet access if available.

Second, I can click thru the following: Computer> Windows C:> Program Files (x86)> Finale 2012> Help Files> Content> Contents.htm, while off-line, and get use of the User Manual, Videos, etc. off my hard disk. I am unable to search, but at least I get to use my reference materials while off-line.

A third is to end that sequence with > Finale, rather than Contents.htm. This seems to give some usefulness for me to search the user manual myself rather than use the non-working search function.

Fourth, I think I like this next one the best if I'm off-line. Click on the Start icon in the lower left hand corner of my Windows based computer screen. Then, in the "search programs and files" box, enter contents.htm. Click on the most likely return to access a working menu for help reference.

My head is still spinning... It would be most desirable if the behavior of my Finale 2012c had not changed. Windows 7. Internet Explorer 11. Thank you for your replies.

I have two questions, both related to the attached image.

1. What do you get when you click on "User Manual" in the Launch Window?

2. What do you have as the location of your User Manual under "Preferences?"

I get the same result as from the help menu. Jon T. (Finale documentation specialist) acknowledged, way back, that there were problems in this are. I don't have the same problems in 2014.

1. What do I get when I click on "User Manual" in the Launch Window ? Internet Net Explorer displays a web page. The displayed webpage shows three areas bounded by darkened borders with nothing in the bounded areas.

2. What do I have as the location of my User Manual under Preferences ? C:\Program Files (x86)\Finale 2012\Help Files It looks the same as your image. I did try some alternative addresses in here but to no useable result.

Dillon,
I have the exact same problem. I had been able to access the local manual offline on Windows XP, but not after my upgrade to Windows 7. The Windows Explorer loaded the manual template, but there was no text, and no error message.
I contacted product support; the person suggested it was a browser problem. Since I had no error, was navigating to the file on C:, and had been able to use Explorer in the past, I was skeptical.
Eventually, I downloaded Mozilla Firefox, and temporarily changed my default browser to Firefox. After unchecking the online option, I was able to load the manual: Support had been correct.
It appears to be an incompatibility between Explorer 11 and Finale 2012c. It is a nuisance, since I do not want Firefox as my default. (Significantly, Ron said he had no problem with Firefox.)
Alternatively, Wlgold makes a suggestion I intend to try.

Daniel
