I am using hyperscribe. I am not a great pianist and I use it as a convenient way to capture ideas. While I am able to play to a click at a suitably slow tempo, I am not having much success with Tap Tempo. I have a Casio CDP 100, with a sustain pedal. But when I tap the tempo I am not getting accurate results. For example, I tap and play 4 quarter notes and I end up with a quarter rest, followed by a half note, another quarter rest and a half note or something similar. I tried tapping using a note, rather than the sustain pedal, and I got accurate results. This leads me to believe that the problem lies in the sustain pedal. So I thought I would ask whether there might be something I am overlooking.

Take a look at Tom Johnson's video tip #6, Repitch Tool. (Yes, that's not what you asked about, but he talks about tapping a tempo. You might find it helpful.)

What RMA is talking about, Mike, is a feature ("Tap Source") where you can tap the beat with a MIDI key or pedal instead of playing along with a metronomic click track. Thus you can speed up and slow down as the music becomes easier or harder to play in. The Tom Johnson video, on the other hand, is concerned with playing in the melody in a one-note-samba fashion to a metronomic click track first to specify the rhythm, then going back and repitching it, a technique perhaps useful for someone without keyboard chops.

I know Zuill uses Tap Source. I'm sure he'll be along.

I tap with the lowest key on the keyboard. I've never done it with the pedal. With the lowest key, you hear the pitch. I suppose there's a way to mute that pitch, but I've never taken the time to figure it out. I've just learned to mentally ignore it.

Thank you all. The video tutorial, while not quite on point, was actually very helpful and worth the time I spent watching it. I am convinced the problem lies in the sustain pedal for when I tap with a keyboard note it works as it is supposed to. I want to use both hands, so I will have to make do with playing to a slow click and perhaps use the keynote tap method for cleaning things up, at least in part.

If the pedal is programmable to send a note rather than the sustain signal, you might try that.

Thanks, but the keyboard is not that sophisticated. I just discovered that if I place a tempo mark in the score hyperscribe uses that tempo for recording even when I set a tempo under "use this tempo." Has anyone else had this difficulty?

I believe that is what you described is supposed to happen. If you are using Finale 2014, I expect you can always change the tempo marking to a new marking after you have recorded the notes slowly (unless you try to incorporate performance data/tempo into your Human Playback).

As far as tempo, if you uncheck "Play staves while recording", then the selected tempo will be observed.

Thank you so much. That is a big help. I had figured out how to work around it but this is much easier. I may call support on the sustain pedal. When I ask Finale to "listen" it "hears" the sustain pedal. The pedal also works if I use it to start the recording. I do not understand why it will not accurately "tap" the tempo. I would really like to have both hands free.

In my case the reason would be two left feet.
