This is a new one for me...

Win 10/Fin 2014d
I am trying to add a new staff to a simple 4-staff piece. The top staff is the vocal line, staves 3-5 are organ accompaniment.

When I add a *blank* staff, Finale thinks it is a duplicate of the top staff and then insists on calling the original staff "Trebles 1". In the top part of Score Manager, the staff says it is called "Trebles 1" but in the bottom, it says "Trebles." I have it as "Trebles" in staff attributes but it still shows Trebles 1.

Is there a way to override this? I would think I can call any instrument anything I want.

Of course you can call an instrument--or staff---anything you like. In the score manager, Finale will add a new staff immediately above the one you have selected. When you choose to add a new staff you will be asked what instrument you want to add. If you select 'blank" then you will get a duplicate of the selected staff. All this is very easy to fix in the score manager--you can drag staves to whatever position you wish and change them to any name or instrument you wish.

Turning off automatic numbering did it. Is there a way to make that the default?

As Far As I Can Tell, the default is that “Auto-Number Style” is turned off, if you add new blank staves via
Staff menu > New Blank Staves…

However, if you instead use the ScoreManager’s chiclet {Instrument List} to add staves, then the default is that “Auto-Number Style” is turned on.

That's helpful to know. I'll give that a try.

Thanks.
