In the piece I'm working on right now, there's a spot where a number of string soloists take over from the sections.

1st and 2nd violins are 2 soli each, so it was simple: "2 soli".
the violas however, provide only a single solo instrument, and a few measure later the celli provide one solo.
my only concern is that seeing only the word "solo" might imply that it is a sectional solo (musically it COULD lead to this misunderstanding).
On the other hand, it feels stupid to write "1 solo".

suggestions?
should I keep "1 solo" or simply use the non-redundant "solo" and pray that it is clear that it means a single instrument?

Finale (started with ver. 3.0) using 2012 (2014 has been shelved for its lack of support for older Garritan libraries) under Windows 8.1
basically ALL Garritan libraries, plus XSample Chamber Ensemble.

I got in the habit of writing "1 solo" years ago because of that very issue. It may look silly, but avoids the ambiguity nicely, and so far nobody's complained.

I'm used to seeing '1 solo' in circumstances like that (think R. Strauss, Mahler, etc.). More precision is never a bad thing (well, okay, in some circumstances it can be), and there's warrant for it from the best, so...

Wouldn't a sectional "solo" be indicated "soli"?

Finally using FinWin 2014 on Windows 7 for everything, despite the irritations…
(Previously used everything back to version 2.0.1)

My Italian isn't much (and experts please correct me if I'm wrong), but I think "uno solo" ("one alone") is entirely proper and you have nothing to be ashamed about in writing "1. solo." As DCrocker says, you can abbreviate it "solo" since due, tre, etc. would be "soli," but writing it out for clarity for non-Italians without a strong sense of inflection seems fine.

In 19th-century Italian opera, where "gran cassa" typically means not only bass drum but bass drum and cymbals together, they sometimes write simply "sola" in the part when they want the drum alone, or "soli" for cymbals alone, since the ending implies which is meant, but "cassa sola" or "piatti soli" aren't wrong.

thank-you Motet for your thoughts on the topic.
I am much reassured.

Respighi uses 'I. solo' in Fontane di Roma (with 'gli altri' for the others that are playing at the same time); Vaughan Williams uses 'one player' in Flos Campi; Sibelius has '2 Viol. I soli' in En Saga (and a 'solo' for viola, but that's more obvious as the others are on another staff); Martinu uses 'solo' at the start of his 6th symphony (though he's makes sure to keep it very clear by adding '(solo)' next to the staff name in subsequent systems). That's four different nationalities. I think you're fine. (Debussy and Richard Strauss, among others, make things painfully clear by adding a new staff for the solo instruments, but that's always struck me as going a bit too far.)
