I learned this morning that if I had Dorico and Finale open on my Windows 7 computer, Finale would not play back until I closed Dorico and restarted Finale. That may be because I run Finale with DirectSound, and Doricouses an ASIO driver.

Could it have been a Rewire issue?

I seem to remember having a similar issue with Sibelius and Finale open at the same time. I'll report back as soon as Dorico arrives (got the boxed version because I need the dongle).

I know this is not the proper place at this time asking for information on a new competitor to Finale, but.....is that the crossgrade boxed version? I went on line just a short time ago and it was not yet available (at least here in the US).

Dorico doesn't yet release the audio driver when it's in the background.

I found that unchecking a box in the Device driver will let other programs play.

Being in Helsinki, Finland, I today bought a boxed crossgrade from Steinberg, Germany. This might answer your question: tinyurl.com/gok63nv

Bought Finale (V2.0.1) for PC on Tuesday 3rd of March 1992. Yesterday, that is.

If Finale users are curious to try out Dorico I would strongly advise to wait for the release of the demo version (sometime during mid/late November apparently). I have indeed, foolishly, bought the crossgrade (even that at a somewhat exorbitant price - ca. 275 EUR - for what turns out to be a very basic beta-version) and consider it, at this point, to have been a complete waste of money (and time, fooling around with it). Although it looked promising with a different and new approach, it is so far absolutely useless to anyone used to seriously composing and notating scores (and parts) in Finale. A series of free updates is promised to come soon, presumably to fix even the simplest things that don't work or aren't even implemented yet at all (just see the flood of threads on the Steinberg/Dorico forum). No question of not staying with Finale for probably years to come....

If you're using Finale for serious work I'd wait at least a year before considering switching. I look forward to playing--just playing--with the demo, though.

The Educational Cross grade I just received from the Steinberg online store today was indeed the full boxed version with a USB dongle included.

As mentioned earlier in this thread it is very basic, and 'barely useable' at this time. The supported output thus far looks really nice, and it's pretty easy to set up a score and throw notes into the thing, but it has a LONG way to go before it's anywhere near the level of Finale, Sibelius, or even MuseScore in terms of what it can do and support.

On the plus side there might be something immediately useful across the board. For people who do not already have a Steinberg USB dongle, you'll get one in the box (worth about $40 US or so), and you'll be able to get free full featured downloads of demo versions of all the Steinberg stuff to try out. I think you also get access to the "Halion Symphonic Orchestra" library in a form that 'might' be useable in Finale if you install the basic HSO VST2 plugin from the Extras folder, or if you happen to have the full version of Sonic 2 or Halion 5. I forget what HSO retails for, but I figure the dongle and HSO alone are worth at least $120.00 or so.

I can't confirm that the Dorico key will unlock the HSO library if it's running in a different host other than Dorico right now because I already owned HSO and have a full key for that on the Dongle as well. My best guess is that it 'should work' provided you find and install the single instance HSO VST2 plugin.

It's the full HSO licence. It uses non-latching key switches by default, so in order to use it with Finale/HP, remember to set it to use latching KS'es (deselect "Temporary KS mode" by hitting the small triangle in the upper right of expressions pane)

This is good to know. I decided to go ahead and jump on the early bird Edu.Crossgrade because I'm overdue on investing in a second dongle anyway (it'll be nice to be able to host some instruments from a secondary VSTi server, plus be set up for Zero Down Time if one of the dongles goes bad). An extra HSO key was something of interest to me as well.

Were the price to include just a download and a registration key, I would most likely have waited on some demo versions to come out first.

For these reasons I'm pretty content with my purchase. I can tell Dorico will be nice once they give us full access from the UI to what all the engine seems to be capable of doing.

I think it'll probably be a while (as in years) before most of us can seriously consider 'replacing' Finale with it though.
