I installed the Fin 25.1 update after the latest Win 10 Anniversary was released. Automatic update so it did it over night without me having any input like it has for all Win updates. Fin 25.1 would not run along with some other issues. Not related to Finale. One of my three printers stopped working. My sound did not work.
I had to do a restore to previous version of Win 10 and stopped any automatic updates.
All came back and is working like it should. Even Finale V25.1 with sound.

I would be very nervous if I couldn't receive security updates.

It looks like there's a way that MM could build their package using static linking, which wouldn't require the DLLs.

I though I had already discussed that. It will involve having to reinstall hundred of Windows updates (not to mention the--often--painful rebuild of all my other applications) with no guarantee that I will not run into the same problem.

Yes, you might have to reinstall programs, but as I recall, there are options to keep certain installations. And, as I said, an up-to-date ISO file will eliminate the need to reinstall updates from the beginning, although there will be some you'll have to reinstall. That should go smoothly with a repaired Windows Update. It worked this way for me in Windows 7 when my Windows Update broke.

So was I, but their "solution" was reinstall Windows. I've discussed that option in other replies.

Thanks for the effort, Zoots, but the page you referred me to is for Windows 10. I did run with equivalent one for Windows 7 when on the phone with support the other day and it failed.

There is a Windows Update Troubleshooter. Has it been tried? It fixed a problem I had.

Hi Zuill,

Yes, it is apparently related to the Windows update application. It is broken on many Windows 7 machines. As I pointed out earlier, I have not had any Windows updates run to completion in several months. They all hang. MM's support team have identified the problem and are trying to find a workaround.

(They have also admitted that deleting the old version of Finale before the new one is successfully installed was not, perhaps, the wisest approach.)

I guess I meant the Windows update problem might be the cause, but not everyone is having that problem. If it isn't connected to the Windows update problem, then I guess I misunderstood your issue.

Bottom line: it's not a Windows 7 issue. It's a Windows 7 issue on Ron's machine, which has Windows update not operating properly. That is a huge difference. I would be more concerned about other issues, like security.

I am far from the only one experiencing this problem. And, yes, I could upgrade to Windows 10--or I can wait for MM to come up with a solution. In any case, I have lost about a week of work and am not anxious to spend more time on computer-related problems right now.

From a lurker ... I updated/upgraded from V25 to V25.1 on Win10 Pro after waiting to see what everyone else had experienced - I've had no issues that I have seen yet - but I'm not a heavy user either, and I have newer (under 1-year-old) i7 box.

I had no probs installing and using Finale 25.1 on my Windows 7 machine. Could Windows updates be handled differently in Canada. Of course Windows machines can have widely different configurations of drivers depending on what a user has installed.

Ron: So why don't you migrate to Windows 10? Problem solved, right? If Windows Update in Windows 7 is broken, a clean reinstall using the appropriate Windows 7 ISO file would fix it (I had this problem). And if the ISO file is reasonably new, you won't have tons and tons of updates to reinstall.

The Windows Update Agent failed on my machine some months ago and I have not been able to run any Windows updates since then. Finale 25.1 requires the latest C++ Redistributable, but, because Windows Updater will not run, it cannot be installed on my machine--and so Finale 25.1 cannot be installed. (Quite obviously, Finale 25 and earlier versions do not require this particular patch from Microsoft because they were produced before the latest C++ redistributable was available.)

It is not just my machine that the Windows Update Agent is broken on--and reinstalling Windows 7 from scratch and reapplying the thousands of patches required to get up-to-date will not work because we will run into this failure again. Any application that requires any of Microsoft's patches issued after the update agent broke will also fail.

At this point, Windows 7 users can migrate to Windows 10 or, stay with Finale 25 until someone comes up with a workaround.

Do they have a solution?

I'm surprised no one thought to test it on Windows 7. QA 101.

They are working on it. But, it seems to me that it should be up to Microsoft to fix it, no?
