Do they have a solution?

I'm surprised no one thought to test it on Windows 7. QA 101.

Okay, it looks like this problem is due to a flaw in Windows 7. You should not experience this problem with other versions of Windows.

Working on it with Lawson. It appears to be a Windows error. I'll let you know how it all turns out.

Perhaps the missing DLL is a Windows DLL only present in some versions?

I had exactly the same problem as Ron running the update. Tried several times 'as Administrator' etc reinstalling 25.0 each time, but no joy. I even copied the entire Finale dir and the update exe to a temp folder and tried to install from there - but still get missing dll.. Then tried downloading the full 25.1 install package, but still got the 'missing dll' so have given up!

I am running Finale 25.0 under win7 in a VM.

How hard could it be to report the name of the missing DLL, I wonder.

I was trying to install the freshly downloaded Finale 25.1. I was forced to reinstall Finale 25 when the 25.1 install failed and wiped out my Finale 25 installation. (It's a good thin I had a copy of the Finale 25 installation program because you can longer get it from MM.)

Ron,

Did you try to install the original v25 (not v25.1)?

I just tried the full installation package for Finale 25.1 and it failed with the same message about not being able to run an unnamed DLL and it cleaned out my main Finale 25 application folder. This is no longer a joking matter.

Use Control Panel to uninstall Finale 25 and 25.1 if they're listed. Then go into C:\ProgramData\ and erase the entire Finale folder. Restart, turn off your antivirus, and reinstall the full installation package.

If you look at the image of the error message I posted it does not name the .dll. Specifically it says, "A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run." There are hundreds of dlls in Windows.

If you are unable to use Windows' Restore feature in Control Panel for recovery, you can at least prevent a setback of any type in the future by using the free but excellent "EaseUS Todo." Select the "sector-by-sector" clone option for a faithful restoration to an identical state (providing you clone the drive before making any major change on your PC). You will not need to register or enter any keys for installed apps. If you don't use an external USB drive, create a partition. I can give you the steps if you wish.

Motet, in my case I moved a copy of the DLL (or a identically-named file) to a directory on the Path. Finale apparently recognized the file was there but was then unable to start.
I quit attempting to deal with this stuff years ago, but for those who still enjoy tracking down this kind of problem, I think this may provide more information - https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms235264.aspx

Do you know if the DLL was indeed missing, or is the PATH variable not being set up correctly?

Support suggested I download the entire fresh copy the of Finale 25.1 program instead of just the patch update. I did that, but am afraid to run it as I do not want to spend the rest of the weekend rebuilding all my customizations. So, I plan to back up everything remotely related to Finale before I proceed.

The last time something like this happened was when I installed a maintenance patch for Finale 2004 and I was unable to use Finale at all. Fortunately, in those days, I had a CD copy of the original before the patch, so I was able to revert after wiping my disk.

v. 25.1 update worked fine - and is working fine - on the Windows 7 box.
On the Windows 10 box, I got the "missing DLL" message. Searched that machine for that file, found it, and copied it to the /windows/system32 directory, which is where it lives on the Windows 7 machine.
>> It's the sort of solution that would have worked in 1995 :-)
Now I just get a "can't start the program" message. Possibly a different version of the same DLL?
Deleting that copied DLL, I am back to the "missing DLL" message. The file in question is mfc140u.dll, BTW.

Motet is on the right track. Crashing when using the Expression tool can occur and when it does, it is best to reset preferences. This has been known to happen from time to time on the Windows side and is something that I had thought was a thing of the past. I will be sure to start keep tabs on this one.

Thanks. That procedure cleared up the V25.0 version I reverted back to using the Windows restore point. I then went through the V25.1 patch again and this time there were no issues with the expression tool (and no need to reset the preferences.)

The only thing I think that might have been irregular in my original update process is that I saved the FinaleUpdaterSetup.exe on network-attached storage (as usual). I had double clicked on that NAS location to launch the updater. But running it that way takes an eternity (not a Finale issue. All large updaters crawl this way.) So I copied the updater to my desktop, which just takes a few seconds, and ran the updater from there. While this desktop-based updater was running, the NAS-based updater was still crawling along in the background. The desktop-based update finished quickly without any error indications. Roughly 10 minutes later, the NAS-based updater popped up the "Welcome to the Finale Bundle Update Setup Wizard" window, which I canceled.

I assumed that the updater did nothing to the application prior to the "Welcome" window appearing, but perhaps there were some file collisions that caused the preferences file to become corrupted. So I would suggest that you look at the possibility of problems that can happen if multiple instances of the updater are launched simultaneously. I emphasize that the NAS-based one never proceeded beyond the welcome screen, so if this is the issue, something must have happened BEFORE the welcome screen appears. If there is such a file collision, that could probably account for a lot of problems in the past, as this is an easy mistake to make, especially on large updaters that don't immediately pop up a welcome screen. Perhaps there is some kind of lock that you can put in place to prevent 2 setups from running simultaneously.

So, am I correct in guessing one can download the update installer or not? If so, does it seem that downloading it first gives better results than running it remotely?

Updated to 25.1 here.
Moved the FinaleUpdaterSetup.exe into the C:/Program Files/Finale folder, and ran from there.
So far, 25.1 is running fine, and loading all Finale files.

Expressions working correctly.

Cheers!

Fortunately, I do not think this was a result of the updater, but perhaps an old issue that has resurfaced. You can easily reset preferences in Finale v25 by saving your work, opening the Preferences dialog box (Edit > Preferences), and then clicking the Reset All Preferences button.

I tested by creating a new score from scratch. That also crashed as soon as I tried to use the expression tool anywhere. It crashes as soon as I double-click, before seeing the expression dialog.

I had set a restore point immediately before installing the 25.1 patch. I restored back to that point. That revered to V25, but now V25 has the same problem. SO it appears I am going to have to wipe out V25 altogether and go back through that install process. Fortunately this did not corrupt 2014.5.

I just checked, and no. The only change I have noticed is that the recent files in the Startup menu (but not in the opening Finale screen) have been cleared.

Is anybody getting the system crash problem when trying to assign an expression? The system crashes when I have the expression tool selected and I click anywhere.
