I'm setting a bunch of hymns. They are mostly set as chords in layer 1, but occasionally I have to split the alto or bass into layer 2 for rhythmic or note clarification. Because of the lyrics, I need to shorten those down stem notes in layer 2 in the treble clef (alto) and the up stem notes in layer 1 in bass clef (tenor).

Is there any way to do this for a region rather than the note-by-note approach in the special tools?

Thanks,
Paula

Robert Patterson's Mass Copy plug-in has a checkbox for copying stem and beam alterations. I haven't tried that particular feature, but it would probably work.

If you make the changes in one measure
you can also use mass mover to copy
them to others. You may have to make
some changes if the rhytm isn´t the
same. A little tip: if you have different
rhytms in those measures, make an extra
measure after the last one with only
sixteenth notes and make the changes.
Use that to copy the alterations.

Paula,

If you go to the options menu and select "Music Options," you will find boxes for normal and shortened beam lengths. Try reducing the shortened beam length (which will prevail through the entire document). This shortened length applies only to notes which have been frozen up or down (i.e., stems forced the 'wrong' way). It will typically apply to the inner parts which, as they approach middle C, have stems dangling into lyrics.

Good luck -

Document options->Stems->Shortened stem lengths apparently only shortens stems without flags or beams.

I've used the other work around of shortening the stems in a measure with the Special Tools, mass copying the stem and beam alterations with Patterson's plug-in, then pasting them to measures as I need them. (Seems like a long way to do a rather simple task.)

Now I'd like to figure out to reduce the size of the flags so they don't run into the noteheads.

Paula -

One other thought occurs (you've probably already considered this). Why not set the verse baselines a bit lower to clear the alto stems, then space the staves farther apart to avoid the tenor stems? This is my standard operating procedure for choral octavos, so it seems logical that it might work as well for hymns.

Paula,

You can reduce the size of the flags in the document options ( > Music Characters).

However, you may mot like the result, since the flags will also become thinner.

Another option is to use straight flags (my personal favorite).

Here it would be nice to have a feature in
special tools that allowed you to choose a
different flag for certain notes, as the
possibility to change notehead.

Custom Stem Tool will change both the stem _and_ the flag. So one solution could be to create a shape with both the stem (using the preferred stem length) and the flag using the size of choice. Mass-apply for all stems-up/stems-down to simplify the process.

Yes Jari, off course you can, but it would
be easier and and faster to have a
special tool that could change the font
and/or the size.

Thank you to everyone for their suggestions. For now I am using Patterson's tool and making a mock measure with the adjustments I want.

As to the question about making more room, there are page restrictions on this project so I have to be as efficient with space as I can.

Thank you again,
Paula
