I am planning on upgrading to finale 2004 soon and I qualify to get the academic version but I don't want to do that if there are functions or features that are disabled in the academic version.  Could someone give me some help with this?

I don't believe there is any difference whatsoever between the "regular" & "academic" versions [other than price, of course!]. Here's MakeMusic's contact info in case you want to doublecheck with them:

TY TY I will call customer service tomorrow and double check that info but you just may have saved me 300 bucks since I am upgrading from the latest allegro software.  I just asked here so I could  have some info to convince my wife that this is a good idea.  (She controls the purse strings)

The difference: $$$

As a student, I've used the academic versions for years. It's the same program.

The only difference (aside from price) that I know of is that it cannot be transfered to another person. The regular version can be sold and registered under a different name (used to be for $25). Not so with the academic version.

Once you have bought the academic version once, the upgrades are all the same price, academic or not.

Get all the mileage you can out of that student ID card. Even though I'm an old fart, I think it's neat I can get into theatres for student prices. I always ask when buying software or hardware if there are academic discounts.

In fact, my legal academic copy of Finale seems to work much better than the (pirated) copies some fellow students use.

Academic "version" is a misnomer.  It is the same identical program sold at an artifically deflated price, as opposed to the non-academic "verison" which is sold at an artifically inflated price.

(Currently using: Finale 2003a, Windows 98-2e, TGTools 2.25, and The Glenlivet when I can afford it.)

Actually Dick, I own the academic version of Finale and I think it's an reasonably inflated price, while the non-academic is an unreasonable inflated price. I know piracy has it's tool on the price, like CD's that could cost $4 if everyone bought it and didn't copy them.
