I have not found a way to convert files on 2004 to PDF.  Is there a way?  Likewise, is there a way on version 2005?

Post the .mus file here and see if one of us can do it. If it works, great. if not, we might be able to see what's up. in either case, a solution may be suggested.

I am definitely a novice at Finale but I downloaded and installed the 2 programs and it worked without a hitch. I printed a sample score to pdfwriter, cutepdf, and straight to an ink jet printer. There was very small differences between any of them. I could see some "jaggies" on the ties and articulations but it looked very good in all cases. I don't need typeset quality and these are very good. 2 files are needed:

gs814w32.exe for windows

CuteWriter.exe

When you click on "post reply", there is a button in that window called "attachment manager". Browse for the file, then upload it. Click out of that window when that is done and then submit the post (after entering text, of course).

although, some of the lines in the staff are thicker than the others. Does it print that way?

No, the file prints out exactly like straight out of Finale with correct line thickness.

I used cute PDF and got the same result as Cliff. There must have been something in the PDF writer that changed the fonts. Recheck the setup at the time of printing the PDF file to see what might be done about the font issue.

I have had similar results when printing from Cakewalk to a printer. On that occasion i was in a hurry and closed down cakewalk before it had completed spooling to print. This somehow caused loss of fonts and the result was similar.

Derek,

1. One of the great album openers of all time, from "Sticky Fingers". Nice!
2. Just in case you need to send the pdf to any Mac users, be aware that there's rampant font substitution going on [including Cyrillic alpabet stufff for the composer/arranger text block].

Another free program which will produce PDF files is PDFCreator, available from SourceForge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ . I use it, and have found it reliable - it's also free and has no advertising attached.

Another option, that gives me excellent results, is Adobe's Distiller. It's not free, but it's worth it. It is set up like a printer that you can select for output from inside any app that has a print option.

re: sending it to the Mac - that's me and the pdf is a mess.
Russian alphabet in the Jazz text blocks, what looks like Courier in the other text blocks, and what would be in the shift/option-2 key slot for the quarter noteheads, an ampersand in place of the clefs, etc.
I attach a pdf file made via my print dialog box - does this work for you guys on the PC side?
hope this helps in some way.

Joel -

Your PDF comes through just fine on my PC, with correct fonts and no line thickness oddities. I've found PDFCreator to make decent PDFs, and haven't run into font embedding problems yet, although I stick to Maestro and Jazz, and Georgia for text (which seems to be a universally-present font).

CutePDF vs PDF995 --- free versions

Does anyone who has tried both have any comments as to differences, advantages, etc.?

In my experience, both work as well for creating PDF files. CutePDF was simple to download and use and has no ad banner. I've been very happy with it.

PDF995 works but has the annoying ad banner. Had I not already been as familiar with CutePDF's operation, it might have been tricky for me to learn to use. PDF995's file editor was a complete joke with little documentation that was very poor. I could never get it to work right and have since dumped all of their software from my system.

You didn't ask about PDFCreator, but here's my take on it as well. I never was able to figure out how to download it. It lists several files that seem similar but doesn't really say which ones are needed, which one to open, how to use them, etc. If the website is that difficult to fathom, I probably wouldn't want to deal with the program.

Thanks Jeannie. Since posting my question I tried PDF995 and had two problems with it. First, it didn't work. But, I'm sure I could have resolved that problem. However, the second problem eliminated it from my consideration --- my firewall told me it was going back to their internet site for those pop-ups every time I tried to use it.

I haven't tried CutePDF yet, but will soon.

I broke down and actually purchased the full version of Adobe. Just like Finale, it was a smart investment. I can do so much more than what we're discussing here. Did you know you can convert PDF's to JPEGs? Go figure.

I highly recommend you consider the purchase if it's in your budget.

I'm testing a shareware product right now to use for converting .MUS files from Print Music to graphic files. It's a virtual image printer which means it takes the output normally sent to a printer and uses it to write a graphic file, the same way CutePDF, et al, create PDF files. In theory, it should be able to create graphic files from PDF files. Assuming it does, I would say $30 is a whole sight cheaper than Adobe (oh excuse me, did my dislike of Adobe slip through?).

All seriousness (?) aside, if the shareware product works out (it is very promising), I'll run a quick report on it.
