Ok, after I convert it to Postscript, I open PDF Converter and drag and drop it into the window. It automatically gets to work. Once finished, all I see is one page with a vertical line on the left margin. I've tried it with two different files. Am I doing something wrong? I tried it with Acrobat Distiller, and this is the log that was created:

%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: Pscript_WinNT_Compat ]%%
%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: Postscript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

What happened? Oh, and by the way, I've been using Finale since '00, stuck on 2005, and to this day, I'm still learning about the features of the version I have. I wonder if we really need an upgrade a year? I really do like the version I'm still on.

Nick,
It may be your older version that's to blame. I have no problems with 2011. but I'm not crazy about this method. At high magnification, I can see that upstems don't connect cleanly with the noteheads.

To answer your other question, the GUI improvements are really nice. Maybe we don't need an upgrade every year, as you say, but taken as a group since 2005, the program has changed a lot. For the better, IMHO.

I guess version 5 could be to blame, but I created the bari part PS file with Finale 2006. Maybe playing with the settings in PDF Creator will get it working?

At what magnification, Mike? I could make the stem connection look a bit rough only at ridiculously high magnification --- high enough that I can't imagine anyone actually using such a level. Maybe my standards aren't high enough, or being an old geezer, perhaps my eyesight isn't good enough. smilewinkgrin My objective is to provide a client with copy that produces professional looking printing without my having to say, as I did at one time; "Trust me. It may look lousy on the screen, but it will print just fine."

Nevertheless, I'm just offering this method as one way to get very good screen presentation without spending another dime on software.

Dick,
I could see the misalignment even at 100%, but it really was apparent at 400%. As you say, nobody will be looking at it that way, so it probably doesn't matter.

That's an easy one to answer - no we don't! :-)

I'm waiting for some more automation in collision avoidance (layers/rests/notes/etc), among other things - but sadly they appear to be off the radar for now. And it's been like that for 6 annual releases!

I love how this topic is ten pages and still chugging along. My latest PDF conversion advice: whatever program you use, keep your operating system up to date. An unusual loss of data in PDF conversion (but not in physical printing!) on my machine was due to an out-of-date copy of Windows XP; upgrading to the latest Service Pack helped.

For the record, I use PrimoPDF. It offers some nice options for quality customization, and also doesn't require a separate installation of Ghostscript, which a very very long time ago I had trouble uninstalling.

Over the years, I have gained the deepest respect for the impact of great music. If Beethoven mirrors our humanity and desire for transcendence, then for some of us a day without Beethoven's message is a day when we are not fully human.

I've found a great PDF tool that will do everything you ever want to do with a PDF file - creating it, merging it, etc. - and it's free. However, the website is in German, but while installing, English can be chosen as the language and the manuals are also available in English. Works like a charm!

I see they offer two programs : 7-PDF Maker and 7-PDF Printer - which are you using? If I'm understanding correctly 7-PDF Maker translates files from a number of formats directly to PDF and is not a printer i.e it will only work with the specific file formats supported. I assume that it would not work for .mus files, and you would have to use the 7-PDF Printer program with Finale. Is that correct ?

Hi Fritz, I tried it out and and it is as you say. The only problem is that the 7-PDF printer seems to take at least 5 minutes to respond, thereby making you presume that it is not working. The Merge feature seems to work quite well.

there are several programs I've tried:

7-PDF-Maker translates various files, as you say, but not .MUS - useful if you want to make a cover page for a score from Word and then include it in a PDF score (with the following program)

7-PDF-Split+Merge can be used for exactly that

7-PDF-Website Converter works very well if you ever wanted to convert .htm files to Word or PDF (such as making printable pages from your website)

7-PDF-Printer can be used from within Finale to print .mus files - the output is very good (perhaps a bit better even than the Primo PDF printer I've been using for a long time). I have not experienced any delay whatsoever - takes a splitsecond.

One thing, though, is that the File Create screen (where you can choose placement, naming, merging, etc. of the file being created) only flashes up on the screen for a second and than disappears minimized into the taskbar. You have to open it, make your choices and then Save.

By the way .... does anyone know a good freeware PDF Editor, one that can crop pages, add, correct or delete some type, etc?
I'm using an old version Acrobat 4.0, which can do all that, but it seems to now have problems reading newer version PDF files.

I recommend the pack of three of Adobe, Distiller-Designer-Professional
Distiller is the original virtual printer from Adobe. Is stable and has a lot of options about quality, file conversions, image management, etc.
Designer has another options to create formularies, among other things. Proffessional is the Adobe Reader with more options for edit documents.

Funnily enough the members of this forum are largely people who expect others to respect the copyright on the works they produce, and conversely respect the intellectual property of others. I don't think you'll get much sympathy for this view here (although we have been known to discuss the issue ;-) )

Thanks for your "advice" and I took note re-editing the post. I will be more careful in future and sorry for my blunder. However I lament your confusion between points of view, honesty and sympathy. If one is susceptible, no doubt they are. For the rest, I recommend purchasing the aforementioned Adobe Pack as well as Finale.

I found a free program called PDFCreator that works real well. PDFCreator works as a printer and creates a PDF file of what appears on your screen. I opened a Handbell piece called "To God Be the Glory," chose PDFCreator as my printer, hit Print and immediately the result was 4 PDF pages of the music. I recommend it!

Don't you find the nag screen irritating ? I haven't tried it myself, but from their website it seems that you would have to live with this if you don't want to pay for the product :

"All three products are available as FREE downloads. The free versions display a sponsor page in your web browser each time you run the software. If you would prefer not to see sponsor pages, you may upgrade by obtaining individual keys for each product at any time for $9.95 each. A suite key sold for all three products is also available for $19.95. Purchasing also entitles you to email support by software engineers (12-hour response time). "

Yeh, a little - but it's not that big of a deal.

I was happy it worked since the other two free converters I tried didn't work at all.  And, evenso, to buy this one is a lot cheaper than going all in with Adobe.

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read
